Not to mention that Malcolm dies.
He doesn't.

Well ... he was dead from 1990-1995 until he was resurrected for the Lost World book.

When the last survivors were gathered on the helicopter Grant asks about Hammond and is told he didn't make it. Then he asks about Malcolm and the same man shakes his head ... indicating he as well didn't make it.

And flash forward months later to the Epilogue: You'd think if Malcolm had lived and it was just a case of unreliable information that was miss-communicated during a crisis situation  that Grant would have said something to that fact after the dust had settled instead of ...

Quote"They did not even permit the burial of Hammond or Ian Malcolm" (pg. 398)

He doesn't.

I know that he was in The Lost World, but wasn't that Crichton bringing him back from the dead once he changed his mind?

Edit: Just saw your post, Bat Chain. :D

I can't be for certain ... but after reading and watching TONS of stuff on everything Jurassic Park ... I can recall Crichton saying that he developed the Ian Malcolm character after himself. That he had no plans to do a sequel. That Spielberg repeatedly encouraged him to write a sequel during the pre-production/production/post-production of Jurassic Park the film.

He of course decided to go ahead and write the sequel ... but he had to write 'himself' back into the book somehow.

It didn't hurt that the cast Goldblum as Malcolm ... making Malcolm infinitely more cool that Crichton could ever hope to be.  And he was a box office draw where as Sam Neill wasn't.

So a combination of money, ego, and Spielbergian influence brought him back.

I'd say I like Crichton's writing because he's good at explaining technical/scientific concepts without disappearing up his own ass like Tom Clancy is wont to do.

20 minutes into Jurassic Park 3 and i want to punch all the characters not named Alan or Ellie in the face... HARD.
specially Billy... who just feels so f**king lifeless, most of all. :P
These arent even "cardboard" cut out characters... these are "pop ups".. made of the cheapest possible paper. :P

The "parasailing" scene has really terrible special effects and is shot in a really awkward way that just doesnt "sell" at all what's happening onscreen.
:P
The Alan Grant and Ellie character stuff is the only thing here that works as a natural progression of who they were in the first film... but it's damn weird seeing these two good actors trying to work around some really sub par dialogue.
