I don't want to shit on parades. I adore the first 2 Riddick films, I's just calling em like I see em lol.

Third installments have the curse, too. The only one to break it so far is Nolan with TDKR, but even that wasn't as good as The Dark Knight, I think. Threequels make me nervous.

I can think of a few promising cases where said curse was broken:

Back to the Future
Basket Case
Die Hard
Halloween
Iron Man*
Indiana Jones
Jurassic Park
Universal Soldier

All those series feature a second sequel that was, at the very least, a slight improvement on the initial sequel. I know there're plenty of crappy examples too, but there is hope for Riddick!

Jurassic Park was the furthest thing from promising there was. TLW is miles ahead of JP 3.

Predator
Alien
Expendables
Karate Kid (Original)

Each had great sequels to give us hope for Riddick.

Diesel takes this character pretty serious and that's going to make a big difference also.

Predator had the AVP movie curse.
Alien had one good sequel.
Expendables gets a pass.
