What films, books, comics, video games, myths, etc. that aren't explicitly related to the Alien franchise do you view as essential and/or supplemental to the understanding of Alien and its expanded universe, its themes, imagery, characters, plot points, and what it borrows or repurposes from other media?

We'll get the obvious out of the way:

WATCH:
• 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
• Blade Runner (1982)

READ:
• The Greek myth Prometheus
• The Roman myth of Romulus
• Frankenstein
• The Island of Doctor Moreau

You can absolutely include media that has released after the films, like Dead Space or Raised by Wolves!

Please, feel free to add to the list and comment below! :D

Local Trouble

Heart of Darkness isn't obvious?

SM

Not really.

TheDerelict

Outland, 1981, Sean Connery. The film is great and can easily be seen as taking place in the Alien universe.

Return Of The Living Dead

The barrels are like Alien eggs. The zombies are fast and slimey like Aliens and the trioxin gas can lurk inside you slowly killing you from the inside.

Elmazalman

Scared to Death (1980).

The film even has its own 'cocoon scene'.

One of the better ALIEN (1979) rip-offs.

There was this one shitty movie that was kind of a ripoff of Alien, with a comet crashing on earth and unleashing a creature that looked like a cheap version of the alien. What was it called already ? From late 80's or early 90's...

The main actor is the guy that gives Rambo his briefing in part 2, and then orders to abandon him behind enemy lines.

Edit : ah it's called Deep Space, and I wouldn't say it's essential at all lol. Just remembered it for some reason.

DEMETER, has some good creepy moments.
Spoiler
Wish Nosferatu / Dracula didn't spread his wings and fly in the film.
