No I'm just wildly making shit up.

The overall design is the same.  Long head, dorsal tubes, tail etc.

Superficially the same but the tone is all wrong, the eye's for a start.Giger was right to lose the eyes.Giger's design for the facehugger was similar too but they chose Dicken's version, which you yourself thought was an improvement

He was obviously going from a brief he was given, and it's inferior to the final version.

But to say it was "freaking awful" when it's so similar I find a bit baffling.

He started off with a brief, then decided to go it alone.

Doesn't change the fact it's still the same overall shape.

It's closer to Giger's Alien than Winstons or ADIs.

I did say it was SIMILAR but off by a mile.

I don't see how.  'Cos it's got bulbous eyeballs as per Necronom IV?  That's extremely minor.

Surface detail, the thickness of the tail, the shape of the head and dorsal tubes are all noticeably different.

Same as the ones in Aliens, Alien3, Alien Resurrection, etc. etc.

I'm talking about Dicken's version compared to Giger's,not the sequel Alien's.

So am I.  Dicken's is as different/ similar as any of the creatures in the sequels and therefore not "off by a mile".

Ron Cobb's was "off by a mile".  Nay a light year.

Subtle and not so subtle changes to a design can make all the difference to success or failure. What I saw pictured I'm glad never made it before the cameras.

SM needs a FAQ.

I noticed,I'm glad Giger came back to do the job himself and Dicken moved onto the Face hugger and Chestburster, worked out just fine in the end.As for Cobb's design,I don't think it was even considered for less than a second before being binned and Ridley sensibly steered him towards realising the human tech depicted throughout the film.

Question time (didnt feel the need to create a new thread for this):

Do we know who was specifically the concept artist and designer of the final Dog Alien?

I read it was Chris Halls (Cunningham)? (Who also helped create the Newborn!)
