It`s probably a puppy of this dog friend he is seen with on promotional materials. Or it`s the dog friend itself. Riddick saves him and raises. It can be near the begining of the film.

Indeed. It just seems weird is all. We all know Riddick has a compassionate side given his feelings towards Jack in the series but a puppy seems too cuddly for a guy like him.
