my only other critisim is the number of character and how confusing it gets at times remembering names, tv and it's limited framework (whilst marginally better than film) i don't think lends well to a huge cast of characters but what can you do.

It pays off. The Wire introduced a huge amount of characters in its first season and that ended up being the best thing I've ever watched. Game of Thrones could be set to follow suit.
