Their is a good chance their plasma weapons are more advanced than we thought.  Maybe in his case his is using a cold plasma that has a high energy transferance.  Maybe the plasma is bottled like in SW with some sort of field that alows the shot to stay coharent longer which could prevent scoring on the surrounding area.
