When Scar sees the eggs in Alien vision, a mist comes out of the eggs. What it it?

And how could anybody breath 2000 feet underground in Antarctica? Pyramid air conditioning?

1) Same mist coming out of the eggs in Alien (I'm guessing).

2) The air that was coming from the surface.
