The first ever 16 seed to defeat a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament has happened! 16 University of Maryland Baltimore County defeats 1 (overall) University of Virginia 74-54. Some are calling this bigger than "The Miracle on Ice", which I certainly don't agree with, but damn, I knew a 16 would eventually succeed in the NCAA tourney but not this. Congrats UMBC!

I don't know what the hell happened there but it has to a fluke. Still it was bound to happen one day. However I still think the field of 32 has never had a one seed beaten either. So that record should be broken soon as well. Virginia should be embarrassed.

I think you are right about #1s in the field of 32. Not to place blame, but losing the nation's best sixth man didn't help. I watched most of the first half and UVA looked like a struggling team on their shot selection and UMBC was crashing the boards on their misses. I had an inkling that maybe, just maybe UVA knew that their offense wasn't good enough and would be their downfall.

Also, Loyola Chicago just advanced to the Sweet 16. This could be the most awesome tourney since George Mason went to the Final Four a decade ago...
