The Coming of Nails

The crater where Bubba's ship landed over 50 years ago had long been covered by the overgrowth of time.  The mound of dirt that had built up around it made for a perfect den for several woodland creatures.  In the spring time a small raccoon nibbled on a root to help cut its teeth that were small and sharp.  Being an ignorant varmint he did not notice the glow of the inner meat inside the root...the taste was not bad and the little critter swallowed some of the 'deep space eradiated' wood...  Soon he would feel the changes, not only in size but in his intelligence and cunning.  Things were about to get interesting in Jacob's Holler.

PJ slapped out at Bubba's large hand; "Stop tryin ta steal the bacon fo I cook it ya dumb duck".  Bubba, face turning red sat back down at the old wooden table with Juney and Grampie Cooter.  The four of them lived in a little 1 room shack on the forest side of Jacob's Holler.  Bubba looked forward to PJ's breakfast's every morning and would steal a piece of raw bacon every chance he got.  Juney had gotten up early this morning as well because Granpie Cooter had promised them to go hunting again today; "Were gonna hit the north ridge boys.  Therz a buck out there with our name all over it I reckon".  Cooter said with a laugh and a swallow of shine to start off his day.  Bubba licked his lower teeth and eyed the jug.  Cooter had known him long enough to know when he was thirsty for a swig of his home made brew.  Pushing the jug across the table Bubba grabbed it up and took a couple of long sloppy pulls from the top as PJ laid there breakfast platters before them.

"Biscuits, possum bacon, and grits; Just the way you like em Bubba"; PJ said with a swing of her hips and a wink of her eye.  Bubba didn't catch the sly hint at fondness, but Juney didn't let anything pass when it came to his sister.  "Stop fawnin' all over Bubba ya sow.  Yer acting like a dog in heat".  Juney said it in a jesting way, but deep inside he longed for his sister even more so now that she was showing interest towards Bubba.  Before too long all three of the men ate their vittles and headed out to the woods.  Grampie Cooter with his old black powder rifle, Juney with his bow and arrows, and of course Bubba with his ever present crooked spear and a sling shot Cooter had made for him seasons ago.

The Gods of the hunt had shown favor on the threesome that day.  Bubba had stunned a huge old buck about 2 miles down the ridgeline with his sling shot, and Juney finished it off.  As was their tradition they cut out the heart of the dead animal on the spot and they all took a big bite; Bubba's being the biggest as usual, and he also wanted seconds.  With Bubba's size and strength they had no need to quarter the beast there; instead, they helped Bubba load it across his shoulders and he carried it all the way home without even a whimper.  All three of them were pleasantly drunk with big grins on their faces as they made their way back home.

Bubba awoke early the next morning and looked forward to helping Cooter quarter the buck they had strung up outback in a high limb off the ground.  His two teeth sagged and a little drool fell from his lower lip as he gawked at the remains of what had been a fine buck...  The bones still hung in the tree, but nary a piece of meat was left on them.  Turning towards the small shack, Bubba cried out; "Cooterz, Cooterz, cume ear quik, sumfin dun stolz our meat"!  Cooter in his long johns still, staggered out the back door still rubbing his eyes; "what in tarnation"?  The pair walked towards the remains.  Never in his life had Cooter seen a full grown buck torn apart so bad.  "Even a mountain lion left more meat then this", he thought to himself.  Almost at the same time they noticed the claw marks on the bones, and on the ground underneath it.  Looking at Bubba with dread on his face Cooter said; "I don't what type o forest devil done ate our meat, but it had claws as long as nails Bubba".  Bubba didn't know what to think and just stared at the prints in awe as he opened the cork on his morning jug of shine.

Later that afternoon, Bo-pa Jr; who was the mayors son and known around Jacob's Holler as the best tracker, rubbed his scruffy chin as he looked up into Cooter's face.  "I beenz lookin at tracks ma whole life, en I never once sawd anything like this... them there are coon tracks Cooter... but I'llz be damned ifen it ain't the largest damn coon ever heard tell of".  Cooter felt a shiver run down his spine, like someone just spit chew on his grave as he imagined the size of the coon that could make tracks like these...
