What's the point of ignoring users if their posts still refresh topics in my feed?

It doesn't work with your name for me.

@[cancerblack] doesn't work.  Neither does @The Eighth Passenger.

I guess it doesn't like special characters or spaces.

Got a couple of "error 500" pages today. Most likely an issue with the host rather than the site itself.
