Quote from: Master on Feb 28, 2012, 08:50:47 PMI don`t really see the problem. It`s 50 th aniversary of Wayland company. Peter Weyland is clearly not in his 50`s, so company must have been started by someone else. This 'someone' might be C. B. Wayland. Problem solved.

The TED talk is set 50 years in the past from the film's present time, so Peter Weyland's age in the video is irrelevant.

Considered a seminal moment in the career of our founder Peter Weyland, this 2023 TED Talk launched Weyland Corp into the international spotlight.

You guys misunderstand me.  I never said that they were look alikes, I just said that they looked and sounded similar enough for their characters to be related.

They don't sound similar at all. Charles doesn't speak with an accent.

Oh oops, you're right; I just meant the appearance, the sound part I guess I put in by accident.

wow where have a seen this concept george lucus.
the mention of internet ruins the technological basis that alien had.
the first alien just looks like they discovered alien technology in the 70s, hence the gritty old computers and bizare spaceship designs, now all i can think of is twitter, stupid spirit crushing mainstream shit, and the new star wars movies
feels relayed with avp

i hope this has little to no connection with the actual movie

It's the most logical conclusion IMO. Weyland looks middle aged in the TED video, add 50 years and you would get a pretty decrepit old man. It would also explain why David is referred to as a butler and why there is a shot of him with David and one of the mercenaries kneeling by his side as though he is some kind of space travelling Don Vito Corleone.

There is also the shot of the mercenaries escorting him under guard. Whoever he is, he is important.

Seems pretty obvious when you think on it.

What an absolutely mesmerising performance. Very, very convincing and chilling
in it's portentous implication. He sounds much like John Hurt. Please leave this in
the film Messrs Scott and Lindeloff!!

Imagine 100 people watch the movie, from those 100 persons 50 are fans of the original Alien, 10 have only seen it once and the other 40 have never seen it.

You put newer tech into the movie, the 40 "newcomers" like it, they've never seen the original movie, the 10 persons can't remember the old computers from the original or don't care and 20 from the hardcore fanbase hate that fact, the other 30 can live with new tech or like it.

So in fact 80% like it or can at least live with it, 20% hate the idea (i guess in reality it would be less)...and now imagine the whole thing with old tech, the newcomers wouldn't understand that and the chance they like something like that in a 2012 movie is pretty low...alltogether the armount of haters would be much greater.

Jeah, http://bit.ly/tgwQvj

Is this the link in that picture? Was struggling to make it out.

I absolutely love the video. Loved Weyland's ending line. Loved Pearce's performance. Starting to get more stoked.

On the displayed website, it isn't neccesarliy clear that the fifty years had passed since his "seminal" 2023 speech.  All that is established, is that the video was made in the year 2023...and that Weyland Industries was celebrating 50 years of "Building Better Worlds".  One could make a reasonable interpretation that perhaps Weyland Industries was founded some years prior to 2023 ,say, for example 2018.

However, there is something hidden the Source code for the page, which clearly states the following:

QuoteIn the year 2023, the Weyland Corporation's legendary founder Peter Weyland gave one of the most important speeches in mankind's history. Join the Weyland Corporation in celebrating our founder's vision as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of his address to the TED conference.

So the current year is presumedly 2073, as has already been mentioned.

For the record, I want to say that I view this viral video as canon.  The question I have though is that aren't some viral videos for other franchises considered noncanon to the movie series themselves?

That Jon Spaihts' twitter quote doesn't sound like he's saying they purposely are changing the canon, rather that the canon is already a mess, and they just wanted to tell a good story. Everybody is putting too much thought into this, as if Ridley and co. are trying to "erase" the AVP movies. They couldn't give a shit.

Damnit, I was hoping no one else would quote the video for their text. Quick everyone, before the list runs out!

I don't think this is less advanced than anything we've seen in ALIEN.
