There's one thing I don't understand. If the Jokey was heading to Earth, why send out a transmission warning other vessels to stay away? If someone has touched on this, I apologize in advance but this thread moves pretty quickly.
To me it looked like someone from the Prometheus activated the derelict, perhaps accidentally. The Jockeys may not have intended Earth, simply someone with an ulterior motive (Weyland...?) The derelict from Alien, by all accounts, is a different ship, different pilot, etc.

Wait, what? I thought this was an Alien prequel ???

Effectz

The Derelict ship is already crashed on LV-426 while Prometheus takes place.

...

Now I'm all kinds of WTF. I've been avoiding plot details because I don't want to be exposed to spoilers but that is so strange.

Effectz

Damon Lindelof said that Ridley wanted to stay away from Alien,he wanted Prometheus to stand on it's own, they didn't want the movie to end with the egg chamber from ALIEN because then you know what happens,so the Derelict from ALIEN will have nothing to do with Prometheus.

I get the two sides here.  But can't it do both? I am either way on this but in the end whether it is a sequel down the road; I want all the ends to meet up.  I am just one of those people.
On the other hand there are soo many that this could connect and like they have said, the last 8 minutes could be that connection.  If Peter Weyland is on the Prometheus, if he has experiences with some form of the xenomorph or at least a form of it, then it would make more sense that the crew of the Nostromo would be sent out to collect what Weyland had experience with for the company, I guess he could "phone in" his experiences.  Also if he dies out there, he seems old enough from the trailer image, the company could have also sent the Nostromo out to retrieve information on his death, since he was the founder of the company.  And the warning that the Nostromo crew could be the warning created by Shaw was the one that is picked up by the crew of the Nostromo? All of this could be done in the last 8 min. of the movie?  (oh yeah and of course a possible chestbust from a space jockey.  again, if it is not directly connected that's fine, but it could have the potential to be pretty cool if it is, and stand on its own feet as awesome regardless)

*side note, the thing in shaws throat from the trailer, and seems to be also removed from her, could it be a tongue like the ones that the xenomorphs have?  maybe she is trying to tell the tongue to cut it out?  the crew seems to be transforming into something??

This is a screen cap from the IMAX trailer:

That's Shaw lying on some kind of operating table. The guy in the hazmat suit doesn't look too human..? Somekind of dream sequence? Shaw experiencing PTSD?

Motion blurred reflection on mask.

Doesn't look like any kind of face (human/mutant/Jockey/Gungan) just as Shaw's arm doesn't look like an arm either (out of context.)

Naissus

It looks like a gray alien.  Could be fitting for a nightmare sequence in the beginning.

The derelict from Alien is not the same as the ship from Prometheus. Proof:

Alien

Note that both arms are still intact:

Additionally, the ship appears to have settled to the ground in its current position like it landed there:

Prometheus

Spoiler
Look at this impact point from the trailer. Prometheus crashes into the ship in the main section:

The main section can be seen damaged and burning from the impact, but that does not explain why the right arm suddenly explodes. This damage from these events is not present on the derelict from Alien:

Additionally, this sequence causes major damage to the ship as it rolls onto its side, quite the opposite of a smooth landing:

[close]

They cannot be the same.

I only want to know one thing....where they are?

No :D seriously i dont get it...so it is way before Alien and the company will get to know the xenomorph now and YET they send 100 years later a mining ship to discover the same artifact not a special squad as they did 100 years earlier and check this... even more bullshit...after Alien NO ONE from the company wants to go to the lv-426 to check out what the crew of the Nostromo found but they send colonist about 40-50 yrs later .... i mean        ???

wtf???  this is the weakest link in the whole Alien story , altough they want the xenomorph so bad that they sacrafice so many people BUT they are so stupid because they would only had to do 2 thing...1. go there and get 1-2 egg , 2. study them and the facehugger somewhere on monkeys but it was difficult for them  ??? :o

...only in alien resurrection they do the correct way ...weyland-yutani needed about 300 year to get something from a planet -.-....and aaaaahhhh my mistake in resurrection there is no more WY but another worlds united army and company or whatsoever...im wondering why the went bankrupt  :P

marsekay

Maybe the derelict gets moved (and lost again) in a failed follow up mission to bring the ship back?

cue sequel
