Why does everyone in the West seem to assume something will be a sure-fire hit in Japan if giant robots and monsters have been shoved into it?

It's been long enough for them to have caught wind of the word-of-mouth about it being a bit light on the substance front. If anything damaged its chances, that likely did.

Lol avatar only did 50 and that was one of the highest grossing western films to open there,  I doubt Japan will do that number, I was estimating 40 and that's probably a little too optimistic.
