I see what you did there. :P

And on a more serious note, I disagree. Not every work of fiction needs to leave you feeling happy. I can name a number of books, movies, etc, that ended on down notes that have continued to stick with me and are some of the best, most fitting endings I can think of.

Completely agree with KiramidHead. There are great films/series that don't end on a high note, sometimes even on a down one.

If you look at HBO's Rome, I wouldn't qualify that as an Happy-End and although they had to rush production, it was really well done.

Same with mad men, I doubt there will be a happy ending there.

Then there is LOST that in itself if you think about it, is not a happy way to end the story... but then again, who the hell knows what LOST was exactly about.

I think HBO have stayed so true to Martin's vision, they will not differ the ending too much. I mean after pulling off a Red Wedding, they can pretty much do anything they want and end  the series any way they want.

I agree.

That being said, I don't think Martin put the Starks through hell just for them to die off with a whimper. The Winds of Winter was going to be called A Time For Wolves originally, so that should tell you something. When winter arrives, the family we started out with is the best suited to thrive in that climate.

Answer spoilered for those interested because I just cannot write short posts. You know how I be. No real spoilers inside :P

and this, for anyone who hasn't read the books:

Spoiler
Okay, I'll give you that. But can you name any that had repeated, disgusting destructions of protagonists without any closure or sense of justice by the end? GoT feels like one huge string of terrible endings, all ending with yet another terrible ending.

I love that Martin turns typical story arcs about main characters on their heads, and that his stories are both realistic and unpredictable, but at some point you have to acknowledge that people read stories for escape and entertainment. Unless you are entertained by constant brutal death with no point other than to illustrate the awfulness of our world, that leaves your story both pointless and gratuitous. It's just not the way stories are told, unless you're writing Schindler's List. There is a very important purpose to witnessing such horrors, things that everyday people definitely do not wish to witness when you deprive them of this greater purpose.

I mean you aren't necessarily 'entertained' by well made depictions of historical atrocity. You don't watch Hotel Rwanda because it's a great, feel-good movie. You watch it because it has an important message to send. You can use that in your stories, but shit, it's fiction! It needs to leave some clear purpose in the reader by the end, in some way.

Another thing to point out is that Martin gets away with it partially because HBO executes the show so incredibly well. If it were handled worse, it could be awful. HBO is just the bomb.

Nice answers there, thanks.

Well, most of those stories don't have a zillion characters to do that to repeatedly, only a handful. And I'm of the opinion that we can't know if the story or deaths as a whole are gratuitous until it's concluded.

Black is really her colour.

Watched the episode.
Many thoughts :
Spoiler
Liked the scene in the North. Setting things up nicely for the Winterfell events in Feast + Dance = S5.
Jaime and Tyrion laughing about their childhoods was nice. Beetle smasher was an odd point though, but interesting.
So long Jorah.

Mountain and the Viper...maybe a bit too short, but so excellent. I winced at Oberyn's death. Reading the books, Sweeper's in depth description. Bloody hell, didn't prepare me at all.
In a way though...watching it back it's almost amusing due to all his pre-fight boasts being 100% wrong.

The end sentiment was pretty straight forward, and a happy one it most certainly was.

You know, I don't want to be that guy, but I really am f**king done with Game of Thrones. The more time passes, the more pissed off and disappointed I get.

Spoiler

That shit was sick and totally unnecessary pandering to the lowest common denominator as usual. f**king ludicrous. The sole purpose was to one-up all of the other shock shit they've already thrown at us. It disappoints me to no end that a show with such strong actors and production value has to act like shocking, b-movie gore and titties are the only things it has going for it.

Considering I know the rest of the story, I'm not missing much. Don't give a f**k anymore, and tired of feeling like ass after watching. Show can suck a f**k. Oberyn deserved better than that garbage.

That screaming f**king cartoon blade runner shit added zero, nothing, to the scene. The emotions and twist would've been just as effective if it had been more tastefully shot, minus the screaming and f**king ridiculous head pop. Doesn't even make sense considering the set-up. Suddenly Oberyn takes one punch and just lays down like a bitch, not even fighting? And Clegane is miraculously at full strength. I don't want explanations because I don't buy them and don't care.

The book did it better, and I feel the show has just gone downhill. Eddard's death was far more powerful a moment while being better-shot, and *gasp* didn't require idiotic buckets of gore porn. This shit was barely holding my attention before and has entered the realm of full schlock trash now that's almost become a parody of itself. I can only see it getting worse. The great actors are the only thing holding it together. Bye, show, I'm happy to say I won't miss your bullshit.
