QuoteI've never seen Aussie rules Football, but from what I hear it's kind of like a mix between football and rugby, just a bit more.........violent?
Depends what you call 'football'. Generally speaking, we (Victorians, South Australians, West Australians, Tasmanians) call Australian Rules Football, 'football' or 'footy'. A lot of people from New South Wales and Queensland call rugby (league or union) 'football' or 'footy'. To differentiate, most Australians call the world game, 'soccer', though it's increasingly being called 'football' too.
Poms wonder why we call Aussie Rules 'football' when the players use their hands as often as their feet. Aussie Rules fans wonder why rugby fans call their game 'football' when the feet are barely used at all. About as much as American Football, which we often call 'gridiron'.
In rugby you pass the ball by hand, backwards, while running forwards. In Aussie Rules you can pass the ball by hand (holding the ball flat on one hand, then punching with the other). You can't throw it like in rugby or American football. You can also kick it, and in order to score, must kick it.
Simple eh?
As a rule, rugby is more violent, but Aussie Rules is a lot faster.
