In his commentary, he clarifies this and says the following words about the Aliens:

"Pretty clever". It's less Cameron's interpretation and more the extrapolation on that as a result of poor comic writers wanting to cash in.

As for the answer: Xenomorph. I'd just sit there and stare. And it'd stare back, eyelessly.

An Alien, if we go by the consensus belief which subscribes to Cameron's interpretation, is totally brainless and knows nothing more than mate, feed, kill, repeat.

Observing their behavior (by Cameron or not) doesn't provide any basis for drawing conclusions that they are mindless creatures. No reason.
And if they don't have technique, they don't use tools. Well. They don't need it. They cope very well without it, are not they?

Clever doesn't equal intelligence. It's still just an animal with instincts.

I have thoughts on this: the fact that they don't use technology and they don't use the tools doesn't prove that they are unable to use them. They can and sometimes do it. And they are able to learn. They simply did not produce the tools because they don't need it. IMHO Ability to learn and acquire knowledge is proof/sign of intelligence.

I hope that now I make myself more clearly.

Cameron made it clear that they have enough intelligence to understand how to cut power to a very specific part of the colony. Out of all the interpretations of the Alien monster, that's probably the most impressive they've ever been.
