It wasn't shown exactly how the Alien got there fully on screen, so these pictures can only be considered behind-the-scenes photos.  The Alien somehow got there via the chains is all that is relevant to the story.

I always thought the upward waterdrops were some arcane function of the derelict's cargo hold and its "stasis field."
