Perhaps the hologram is the depiction of some kind of stargate/wormhole conduits that coincide with certain star systems - remember the Grand Central Station from 2001...

The extreme outer 'orbit' pathways do look very odd and contain some wierd regular shaped objects that must be massive (monoliths? ;))

Maybe thats what the telescope/chair thing actually is:- a stargate!

Space Jockeys = Ancients from Stargate!

There's definately someone in there, but.....

But what?

How about not "what" but rather "who"!!  Me, I think it's Guy Pierce, I also think it's something to do with this:

I think this is one of the mercs who is responsible for the attack on the jockeys and therefor they turn on the humans.
And therefor he is the only one who got out alive from his team and still fubar.

I wonder what's going on in this scene. I mean look at the guys head, it's clearly deformed (and especially if you watch the 720p version on iTrailers).

Looks clearly like galaxies to me.

With all respect, they are NOT galaxies.  The things orbiting the central body must be planetary systems.  Some of the planetary systems have their own orbiting moons, which is why they show up like "mini-solar systems" in the context of the overall "starmap".  Although, as I explained (from a scientific standpoint) early on in this thread, the starmap does not make much sense.  All major (and most dwarf) planets orbit their central star in more or less a common plane, known as the ecliptic plane.  This "starmap" looks more like the proverbial "Bohr" atom, which shows orbits at all kinds of angles.  The reason that planetary / stellar systems evolve so that planets orbit a star along the same plane is well understood in astrophysics, and has to do with the Conservation of Angular Momentum during the collapse of the primordial gas cloud which ends up forming the stellar system.

I think this is just an example of either poor research, or the concious effort to make the visuals more "sexy".

When i say Galaxies, i just mean star systems, planets or anything like that.
I'm no specialist.
As for the rest you lost me ^^
You might be right but it does the trick for me.
I'm not expecting hard science facts from a scifi movie with monsters and spaceships.
Sunshine or 2001 even have their flaws or lack of accuracy to make things look good on screen.
I m sure that the movie will take a lot liberties with space travel, genetics, phisics etc...
Hope it won't spoil the movie for ya.
:)

Personally, I think the space Jockeys are human anyway, I just hope I'm wrong, but there's something about the way this is all unfolding. We know there won't be any Xeno's, and that's fair enough.  But from what Scott stated on Alien Prequel News (on 17 Dec.), it seems his whole philosophy for Phometheus is not only built around the concept of God(s), but the very notion we are not only not alone in the universe, but there are mostly likely more of us out there. Of course, it would be truly niave to predict we are only indigenous to Earth, but do we really want to discover something more human about ourselves in this film??

If they are ONLY human yeah that would a great disapointment.
One can only hope that there is more to it.
Sounds to easy for Scott.

Hm, quite possibly...

I hope there is no mutation. Only good mutation into monster was in The Thing.

There's absolutely no evidence for it so far.

I know, just saying.

I`d love to see something fresh, mutant creature was done in The Cave, Descent, Pandorum, Relic etc. etc. And don`t get me wrong I like those films (especially Pandorum and Relic) but I don`t like it.

No 'solid' evidence... just one intriguing candidate for something very disturbing non-the-less
