I just revisited Predators yesterday, as the start of a little "road to Prey" marathon I'm kicking off. Last time I saw this one was just before The Predator's release in 2018 (note: I will NOT be revisiting The Predator).
I figured I'd start with Predators, before moving onto a proper Predator/Predator 2 double feature, mostly because I'd like the quality of my marathon to improve as it goes on. Figured it doesn't really matter, since continuity is basically a non-issue in this particular series outside of a couple references here and there.
I *like* Predators. Quite a bit, depending on my mood, in the film's first half as the tension is ramping up, the characters are figuring out their predicament, and they're getting a feel for this world. Once they meet Noland, though, the whole thing just spirals into a mess as it just kind of goes through the motions and races towards a finish line without any real punch to the action or scares. The movie is packed with really good ideas, and early on the execution of some of them is solid, but I wish it was able to do more with those ideas in order to provide a more singular experience. The potential is there in spades (and that's why I'd actually be pretty curious to see another movie that takes a shot on a game preserve planet like this), even though there is quite a bit to the film that doesn't always live up to that potential that they're just on the cusp of meeting.
