From Up On Poppy Hill (2011)
Goro Miyazaki's second movie for Ghibli is a somewhat predictable coming-of-age teen romance about two students who want to save their clubhouse from demolition and in the process fall in love with each other. Their friendship takes a hit when they discover that they might be siblings. This time Goro got help from his dad, who wrote the screenplay. It's a very enjoyable watch, with gorgeous animation and a jazzy, up-tempo soundtrack. Of course you know that it will end on a happy note, but the movie will still keep you glued to your seat. 8/10
The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
The Castle Of Cagliostro is the grand debut of Ghibli maestro Hayao Miyazaki. So far I have only seen the live-action movie by Ryuhei Kitamura, which I've enjoyed very much. Lupin III is a so-called gentleman thief who discovers that the money he stole from a casino is counterfeit. He tracks it down towards the castle of Cagliostro, where a young woman is held hostage against her will and who is forced to marry the evil count. This movie made me think of James Bond, but with a lot more comedy. Lupin himself often acts like a kid, but is irresistibly charming at the same time. The animation is pretty rough, but the backgrounds are very detailed and the soundtrack is fantastic. A highly entertaining watch. 8/10
