The reason is the M41-A was named and given multiple loving closeups and a walkthrough of its use and features in the film. Its design is only a small part of why it stuck so well in people's minds.

After all, if it was just the design, you wouldn't have thought to ask

Since it's the same weapon, very slightly modified.

The M41A pulse rifle is cool and all, but resurrection has a gun in a thermos. A GUN...in a thermos. Iconic. 😎

Yup; I mean aesthetically she is literally Kenner Ripley. 😂

Because I can think of a buttload of better reasons.

More than this?:

There is a reason the M41A (lower picture) is an icon of SciFi history and the upper picture from Resurrection was forgotten.

In terms of aesthetics the M41's design is based on phi or the Golden Ratio, 0.618. The horizontal position of the mag in relation to the shroud (Golden Ratio), the 60 degree angles of the shroud and mag, the vertical height of the mag in relation to the upper receiver and shroud handle (Golden Ratio), the length of the carry handle shroud in relation to the overall length of the whole weapon (Golden Ratio). How the front of the shroud ends at the rear of the pump handle. How the metal "tab" holding the shrouds together is at 2/3ds of the triangular area it lies in (above and forward of the magazine). Many more examples.

It was a literal work of art. The bright red digital display being icing on the cake adding a third dimension to the weapon. I appreciate these things because design and ratios is my work.

People gravitated towards the M41-A because of this natural aesthetic. There is a reason it has been manufactured in mass produced items you can buy (HCG, Snow Wolf, Matrix Airsoft, NERF), while bar you me and a handful of others people have never even heard of the gun in the upper picture, which doesn't even look like it has a usable handle. It looks (artistically and aesthetically like it was thrown together) like a crowbar. Sure it might be functional in universe like a crowbar or screw driver is, but as a viewer appreciating aesthetics, there is nothing to appreciate.

We can't deny that there is a natural very very well thought out aesthetic to the M41-A and the other weapons are forgotten. Certainly not adored enough to be mass produced by third party companies.

This thread (the poll) confirms that almost twice as many people prefer Aliens (the lower picture) as the next best movie (Alien 1) for very well thought out reasons. It was a work of art.

@SiL: Yes, casting actual Ellen Ripley as opposed to a brunette Hollywood clone.

@BlueMarsalis79: Thank you so much for that link. What an awesome video.

Neil Blomkamp is me.

It's hard to explain the cognitive dissonance that I sometimes feel when discussing the franchise with people. But for people like me (of my age) who saw these movies as they were released to cinemas there was a -tremendous- let down that happened in 1992. Alien (Scott) was 1 Alien, Aliens (Cameron) was multiple Aliens. We all had such great hopes for A3.

It was going to be all out war on Earth? A venture to the Aliens home planet? More lore? Was the Xenomorph a manifestation of a realm beyond the universe where raw emotions with no logic reigned? Was that why the sexual Giger shapes were so repulsive and attractive at the same time? Why humans couldn't really "place" them?

No, Hicks dead, little Newt dead, all in the opening minute. Ripley comitting suicide at the end.

What a let down.

I know for a fact that this is what we all felt back in 1992.

Blompkamp felt exactly the same thing (there were so many of us). It seems like he really understood where this franchise had needed to go after Aliens. Where it wanted to go.

Say what you like but Blomkamps Alien 5 would haven been an EVENT. The entire fanbase would have looked foreward to it years in advance (and we did).

All we have now of that parallel timeline sequel to Aliens is the 2013 Aliens: Colonial Marines game. Which (at least on PC with TemplarGFX) scratches the itch somewhat.

But man would Blomkamps Alien have been special.

Think about it, it would have been different but- a true sequel to Aliens. Alien 3 was different (way different to what we expected) and has its fans. Blomkamps A5 would have had its fans for decades to come.

In all honesty I think in that parallel dimension, internet polls would be divided between Aliens 1986 and Blomkamps A5 being the single best movie in the franchise.
In all honesty I think that the better that could ever happen is this Blomkamp dumb crap getting cancelled. Alien 3 did the best to finish the trilogy, I don't buy the Ripley-Hicks-Newt happy family BS. This is the Alien franchise, it's brutal, unfair, doesn't forgive anyone

@gold

Alien3 is a true sequel to Aliens. It follows on directly from it and builds on the story.

It's had many fans since 1992.

We know from Resurrection that fans don't take well to comic bookish versions of Alien stories, and that's exactly what Blomkamp's would be. Queen themed body suits, hybrids to make Kenner blush - it's all a bit silly.

I was all for Blomkamp making his Alien 5... Until recently

Seriously the news shared by Mike convinced me otherwise.
