If the Engineers did indeed create us, perhaps we were created to be monkeys in a lab? We were their test animals.  They needed creatures with similar DNA to test their weapons on.

Perhaps we were just a lower order of species that lived originally on the Engineer's world and they relocated us to Earth, much like rounding up chimps for a laboratory. 

Either way, it's possible that the purpose of Human kind is just to aid in creation of weapons and we can blame every deadly incurable disease from the Black Plague to AIDS on them?
