Unfortunately I had to cancel a LAN party over this.
Even though AvP 2010 seems as though it can host a listen server and browse LAN games without the Dedicated Server, unfortunately all of multiplayer is blocked off if Steam's running in Offline Mode. Where I host in Clanton, AL, the recreation center lacks an internet connection and because it's a town in the sticks, there's no 3G wireless we can share.
For Quakecon in Texas, every year the connection to Steam is blocked remotely because of too many connections from a single IP, and that's on top of the overtaxed bandwidth as-is. I'm sure there's plenty of other LAN party communities both large and small that are affected by this, because internet is scarcely found at any LAN held at a rec center or warehouses, and most large corporate LANs that I've been to. If internet is even available, you can be sure it's unreliable.
Rebellion, please allow us to properly host and browse for the game at LAN parties when there's no connection to Steam. If the multiplayer is blocked out of fears for piracy, I believe these fears to be unfounded. Team Fortress 2 allows for multiplayer in offline mode, and that's damn near impossible to pirate for LAN parties because of all the version mismatches since patches are delivered only through Steam. Assuming that AvP will be patching in the same manner since it's so closely tied to Steam, it should be a non-issue. Everyone who wants to play will need a legit copy of the game, and if the game's any good, that isn't a hard thing to pull off. Really it only drives sales.
I love PC gaming for three reasons: Mouse+Keyboard, mods, and LAN parties. But if developers continue to follow this dangerous trend of crippling LAN play, there would no longer be a reason to host LAN parties, and that would be a sad day indeed.
I encourage everyone that is affected by this issue to please contact SEGA (registration required) and voice your opinion. And yes, this is essentially a repost from my thread in the Steam forums, but I hear that Rebellion developers actually browse this forum so I'm posting here for more visibility. Please do not derail this thread with immature "pirates always win" or "I want LAN so I can play for free"-type crap. That doesn't help.
