Quote from: [cancerblack] on May 25, 2022, 09:29:02 PMWhich unfortunately, all the sensible gun control law in the world can't prevent. It's a long term poverty issue more than anything.
I'm all for good gun control measures but the last sentence nails it. You can have guns and not go on a rampage. You can have severe mental health problems and not harm another person. You can have a gun AND mental health problems and not shoot up a school or a shopping centre.

Everyone looks for quick fixes but the problem is the whole thing is rotten to the core. Minimum wage is pathetic, it's cheaper to die than visit a doctor, people are constantly telling you your problems are some marginalised group's fault, they're forcing people to have babies they can't afford forcing an unending cycle of poverty and desperation, and on top of all of this you've got centuries of fetishising guns as a way of solving all your problems.

The US has had 288 school shootings. The next highest country is I think Germany. With 8.

It's not a gun problem, it's not a mental health problem, it's a USA problem.

I agree about system being rotten to the core but that 18-year-old murdered those poor kids because he was f**ked up in the head. People with severe mental health problems shouldn't be allowed to own a gun.

Some recent ruminations on the issue from my FB acquaintance:

QuoteIs it too soon to point out that Uvalde is a small right-wing town in Texas which voted for a rabidly pro-NRA congressman, and that most of the parents of the dead children probably supported the lax Republican gun policies that led to this tragedy?

QuoteMass shooters often post racist or violent fantasies on social media, as well as pictures of themselves proudly brandishing guns.  And this would be taken as a warning sign ... in a country where this behaviour was not common.

QuoteRepublicans in 1992: "There are 192 million guns in the US, so there are already too many guns in circulation for gun control to make a difference".

Republicans in 2000: "There are 259 million guns in the US, so there are already too many guns in circulation for gun control to make a difference."

Republicans in 2009: "There are 310 million guns in the US, so there are already too many guns in circulation for gun control to make a difference."

Republicans in 2020: "There are 400 million guns in the US, so there are already too many guns in circulation for gun control to make a difference."

You have literally two hundred million MORE guns on the street than you did when Republicans first started saying that it was "too late" for gun control.  When are you going to stop listening to this idiotic and dishonest argument?  Think of how much better off you'd be if you'd ignored these mendacious corrupt hypertensive Viagra-dependent thimble-dicks back in 1992.

We shouldn't kick people when they're down (in this case parents of dead children) but this statement isn't wrong. At the end of the day, if you want to keep yourself and your kids safe why would you support gun policies? Because from their perspective owning a gun is keeping one safe which obviously isn't true. Vicious circle.

Is Fox lobbied by gun industry or am I asking rhetorical question?

Absolutely. Gun control is part of the solution.

But America is full of angry, desperate people only too ready to shoot someone for upsetting them. Obviously making it harder to get a gun will help curb that, but maybe it's time to actually address why people are so angry and desperate to begin with.

It's always a good time to ask such a question but let's be honest. Nothing will change when it comes to gun policies in US. Money talks. I want to be wrong on this but I claim that it will only get worse and worse as the world we live in right now is crumbling down. People earn less in relation to inflation. Spend more as prices are rising as we speak. That cases stagnation which leads to economical and social inequalities (job loses) ... which leads to more anger, frustration, depression and so on. Which at the end will lead to more mass shooting. We're at the edge.

The same people refusing to enact gun legislation are the same people refusing to enact any other legislation that would let people keep their guns and not worry as much about mass shooting. It's wild.
