Fred Dekker talks working on The Predator in a new interview with Moxie Sozo. Dekker isn’t able to give any massive updates on The Predator, re-iterating some of the points he’s previously spoken about.
Dekker was able to talk a little about how he’s found working on The Predator. When asked what it was like working within an existing franchise Dekker said:
“It’s easier in the sense that you don’t have to start with a blank page. The genre, the tone, and a lot of the specifics of the mythology are already established, so to a degree you’re free to paint a new picture with the existing colors. The downside is, sequels, reboots and remakes have historically had a tough go of it, creatively—and the new, rabid internet fan base makes it even harder.
The hardcore fans have their Shurikens sharpened (that’s a Predator weapon, by the way), just waiting for you to fail. So it’s a double-edge Shuriken: You want to do something new and fresh with the concept, but not alienate the core fan base who have a pre-set idea of what they want. It’s a tricky tightrope walk, for sure.
Ultimately, however, the worst thing for the creative process is a fear of failure, so we’re trying not to second-guess ourselves and go with our gut instincts. We’re making the Predator movie we want to see.”
Fred Dekker also spoke a little about his ongoing involvement with the writing process, saying that he’d been working closely alongside Shane Black to ensure the script was specific to the casting and the shooting locations:
“I’ve been traveling to and from Vancouver to tailor the script to cast, locations, and budget requirements. So yes, it’s a fluid process.
Shane is really great about keeping me close as a sounding board, but at the same time I’m not the director, so if there are huge mistakes in the movie, I can always just blame him.”
And Dekker rounded off the The Predator part of conversation with this tidbit: “It has healthy doses of the trademark Shane Black wise-ass dialogue, foul language, and breathless action.”

He had a miserable experience on Robocop 3. The new special edition being put out by Scream Factory should reveal some interesting behind the scenes stories. I don't know if I'll get it though because that movie is really bad.
I feel like most of us are trying to temper expectations but remain cautiously optimistic with this one. Black is very dependable and if he sticks to his word we should end up with something at least on the level of "Predators with better dialogue- at Christmas."
I actually like that they're taking inspiration from the entire saga, even though AVP could've turned out better those films did a good job of introducing new toys and made these ugly muthas feel a bit more like an actual space-faring culture. They evolved the overall aesthetic and even the sound design of the first AVP expanded on what had gone before in interesting ways (like changing how the clicks sound in predator POV). So there's definitely stuff to mine there, and lessons to be learned of course.
That's... Incredibly arbitrary of you.
It's the truth.
I wasn't referring to you, but to how overdramatic Weaver, Scott, etc, all acted about the very idea of the concept.
It isn't about it potentially being good, I am just against the idea of such a film ever being made again. I understand that you and many others here love the idea, but I do not.
And that's where it should stay, in the comics.
I take a bit of offense to that idea.
If wanting to protect the Alien franchise from another potential crossover makes me pretentious then so be it.
TLDR:
Fanbase unite! Let FOX know if they're doing well or creating rubbish!

As far as the "Lost Tribe" ... I agree, the clans and everything depicted around the Predators since Predator 2 has seemed far less interesting. That short scene at the end of Predator 2 is one of it's best, shining moments. Each Predator feels fantastic and individual, and that's in large part because Stan Winston had his guys and gals break off and work on each one individually to give them character. "Here's your Predator. Here's a few parameters. Now go nuts."
The AVP version of Predator culture seems very very clean and... Cold. It's very metallic and colorless. The impression we get in Predator 2 is a very worn and "Earthy" species. They're high tech encased in low-tech.
the last 5mins of the movie will have the predator board his ship and hit orbit ..... a message is coming in on his scanner and a hologram of a band of fugitives comes up ....... scans show us it's the bad bloods from predators .....
holograms of stars systems flash up , honing in on their last known location .....
smash to black ......
That they're digging into everything Predator related shows clear devotion, if it wasn't simply a mix up between Predator and Ninja , maybe it will help them sift through everything that went wrong and pull out everything that went right. The Predator scenes of AvP:R were some of the major redeeming moments for that film.
Gotta admit, the irony made me smile.
Personally I'm a fan of the shurikens. The smart disc just looked a little too dull to me. Though it would be nice to see either in the new film. But above all, just bring us a good film.
I don't care if pssyface has katana's, long bows or whatever. I just want a nice predator movie , with good characters and an entertaining story. Just like the first one.
But yeah... even this is hard to grasp for hollywood these days.
Yeeeep. Don't dare try to have a sense of humor, that has no place in Predator.
And this is what Fred is talking about.
The shurikens were nice additions to the Predator arsenal. But I'd like to see a return of the traditional disc.
I reckon he means this -
https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fvignette3.wikia.nocookie.net%2Favp%2Fimages%2F4%2F42%2FShuriken.PNG%2Frevision%2Flatest%3Fcb%3D20121202144619&hash=a4911c0ef76b50f9a743055e5bf82b8c78d656e2
so im very curious on what Black is gonna deliver, as a part of the franchise as a director/writer and as a predator fan/visionaire.
It certainly wont be an Iron Man 3 that im sure of by now.
So lets start the show.
Besides the disc in P2 i can only think of the AVP shuriken.
Has the Naginata ever been used by a Predator outside the expanded universe? I can't remember... Either way, I think it's a nice shift considering the Predators in "Predators" had their roots in European hunting styles.
With any luck.
@ Hicks,
Will the site do an interview with Fred Dekker down the road? I think that would be fun.
Exactly. It's impossible to please everyone and to be aware of that and just go with what you want to make is the best way. I really hope this mean we aren't getting any reused dialogue as fan winking. lol Personally I'm loving everything I'm hearing about this film. I have real confidence in Black and Dekker.
It's no worries.

As i been a long time guest on this site, i see that there are many different views of people on the movies,
its almost impossible to please them all.
One likes AVP one like Alien3 one dislikes Alien3 some hate P2 some adore P2 but all are fans, i think this franchise is hard to make right now, so give it all you got, or dont go.
