Aliens: Colonial Marines ‘Escape’ Trailer

Gamespot has released the newest Aliens: Colonial Marines trailer in which Sega and Gearbox Software reveal the new competitive multiplayer mode ‘Escape’. The video also reveals a new type of xenomorph called the Spitter.

“Escape sees a team of four Colonial Marines fighting through a series of areas to secure a safe exit while an opposing team of four Xenomorphs attempts to stop them at every twist and turn, and will be playable on the PAX Prime show floor this weekend.” Gearbox said.

Nah, not as much annoyed as confused... If this was just another Alien game then I'd like to try out these new breeds, but when proclaiming this is cannon... well, that just doesn't sit well with me :P

Still looking forward to the game, but just the single/coop-mode so far. The multiplayer aspect doesn't do it for me :/

A spitter, a crusher, a Lurker... Wow! This will be the best L4D-mod ever!

This, the Mode in AVP2, I forget what it's called, and VS Mode in L4D, but I'm not bothered by it. It's a fun game mode, and I am looking forward to it in ACM. Also, I'm happy that they have multiple classes of Xenos. More dynamic gameplay.

    I believe it's Evacuation.
    Thank you.

Oh, I'm all for dynamic game play, and from that point of view I can appreciate that they put in different classes. My grief lies in all this talk about the game being cannon. It's been discused alot as it is, but when they invent new breeds of aliens, purely for the ballance of the game or to sell the game to L4D players... and not for the sake of the story... then...I'm not really interested.

If they manage to incorporate the new breeds in the story, in an interesting way, then I'm all for it

QuoteBut... if there's weldable doors, does that mean aliens can break through or open them when they're not welded?

In the film it seemed that any door was 'weldable'.  And those that weren't opened via motion sensors.  Except when there's no power and they need to be manually slid open.
  5. OpenMaw
    Well said, Mr. Tyson.

Personally, I liked this trailer quite a bit.

More of this is what I want in my Colonial Marines. Frantic team work scenarios. It's something the ALIENS games have needed more of. That sense of being these marines in survival situations.
  6. acrediblesource
I think the point of the weldable doors was to reenact those scenes iin Aliens where doors were locked and they had to get through  or welded shut so the simple task of opening these hulking doors proved impossible. Lots of people think, well couldnt the aliens just break them.

Logic tells you, "then why not make those doors out of ply wood".
The only thing that could possibly break them would be the crusher.

    all in all who cares?

my point is... shabang a bang.
  7. RagingDragon
I wouldn't expect something like that, but it's possible.  I'll be happy if they have enough good colony maps with at least one objective to move to.  Maybe they'll have weldable doors to determine the breaks between areas in Escape mode, like a safe room sort of deal where you can weld the door and re-arm before moving on?

But... if there's weldable doors, does that mean aliens can break through or open them when they're not welded?  If I can ram a door as an alien, I will be willing to overlook much of what has been witnessed during this difficult production.

If maps suck, multiplayer game life probably suck :(.  Killed AvP 2010, even before the DLC had a chance to really kick in.  I thought some of the DLC maps were great, but just too little too late, and SEGA didn't help things.

...wait, are you telling me this is an Aliens game?

Actually I'm really looking forward to this game, it's just that the alien classes feels of. Every time we've seen multiple aliens in a movie they've been of the same breed. the predalien, the runner and the newborn are all unique (and fairly uninteresting) creatures. I'd rather see them in the single player/coop -campaign as "bosses" than playable characters in multiplayer. there you'll be facing them every single time... not very unique any more.

    Just my thoughts
  9. acrediblesource
The Lurker as i sstated before doesn't have its head shell blown off. I have the highres 1080p 60fps version, and its just the angle that its in. sure as hell looked like it was being blown off or turned into the black head. Interesting concept but its would be confusing and odd to me that it would.
  10. ShadowPred
The concept art with the xenos being in a WY  stasis pod lab...if this is in the game and explains some of this shit, then I'll be fine.

Won't explain why the f**king colony is still around from the damn blast, but that's for another post.

Screenshot #5 is the manually-operated sentry turret footage I was referring to earlier, there must be a significant reason though why the player would feel inclined to use the turret themselves rather than providing supporting rifle fire for the automated turret. Perhaps when AI-controlled, its rate of fire is slower or it must 'lock on' to a target before firing?

@SpaceMarines: I've never read the books myself but I've heard good things. I started with Fire Warrior on the PS2, then moved to the Dawn of War RTS PC games, and a good few months ago I joined the Ultramarines Chapter (clan) for Warhammer 40K Space Marine on the PS3.

Ok thanks for clarifying that, SpaceMarines (and I hope your name refers to the Adeptus Astartes! ;)).

No problem, man. Sorry to disappoint you, though, my name has nothing to do with WH40K, merely the concept of a "space marine" in general. Although I have been interested in getting into it, simply intimidated by the sheer size of it all; I have heard the Horus Heresy is a good place to start, though.

Well, nothing wrong with that. :)

Quote from: FightFinda on Sep 01, 2012, 11:02:56 PMI think your answer supports my second point though; lighting can make the xenos look very different depending on how dim the environment is, and I suspect that's the case with the greenish hue of the Lurker's shoulder tubes.

Oh, definitely. I find this the most with the Winston Aliens. Look fantastic in the film with the right lighting, not so good out of that.

Well I definitely see improvements in this trailer. Pulse rifle sounds better, seems female marines might be in. The atmosphere and frantic-ness of trying to survive appears to have been captured. The aliens look good including the spitter, andshould be fun to play.

Hoping they iron out that smartgun sound though - avp2010 all over again.

Quote from: MrSpaceJockeySo far though, the only aliens with actual skulls beneath are Kane's son, and....sigh...the Predalien.

I don't recall the original Giger Alien from the first movie ("Kane's son") as having a translucent cranial shell showing us a skull shape beneath? I'm pretty sure the first to do such a thing was a few interpretations in model-form, and the Pred-Alien. Didn't Kane have a smooth, black cranium?

No, it always had the translucent cowl. The lighting in the film made it look opaque, though.

@Sexy Poot: I'm pretty sure the greenish glow on the lurker's shoulder tubes are a result of intense lighting made to give us a view through the translucent shell of the lurker's head. You can see the bright light glinting off Mr. Lurker's head and shoulders in both cases - I'd say that glow would be hardly visible in the standard dimly-lit environments.

Sorry folks, upon closer inspect to the 60 fps version of the video, i can confirm that the shell did not come off. Its still there, just that the angle is steep. Just a sliver of the shell looks like its still there. :(

I'd like to confirm a small tidbit of vital information regarding the Lurker in the new escape video. If  you goto 2:04 in the video you see the Lurker running at a marine whilst getting shot in the head.

Look closely to its head before and after getting shot. Notice the change?
I can only come to two conclusions: Either
    1. You blow its shell off revealling its skull.
    2. Shell hardens and becomes completely black.

This explains the missing title card for the smooth headed alien. But someone told me that the Lurker is the smooth headed alien.

Yea, its generally believed that the lurker (really the drone) from the first movie, evolves into a warrior (second movie). Sheds the dome when it doesn't need it to protect the developing skull. Nice pointing that out tho, I missed it the first time. Gotta rewatch.

This is their best trailer so far, but the spitter ruins it (i also dislike the crusher). I think  the spitter is actually pretty well desingned but still, the design doesn't fit Alien universe. Looks like they took the it's just a videogame mentality on the contrary to their authentic Aliens sequel/ Alien 3 prequel which Gearbox claim they are making. There are just too many facts about this game i think are suspect and would have looked ridiculous in the film. I wouldn't be so negative if this game was another fps with xenomorphs and marines in it. Im still sure this game will be a lot fun and probably will buy it and am glad it's being made.

That said, i think the spitter (hate the name) would be kinda cool if the acid bags would be dark green almost body coloured while the xenomorph is not attacking. Glowing would commence as soon as player touches the attack button. Longer the button hold duration, deadlier the attack, predator shoulder cannon style. Quick push withalmost no glow and very weak attack, long push results instant kill. The way i see it spitters should be especially well camouflaged and when a marine sights ominous glow from the dark he has to react instantly or he's history.
