AvP2 R-Rated Trailer Review

Hicks over at Alien Experience has done a great review of the R-Rated Trailer. Covers a lot of points including the positives and negatives of the trailer and what we learnt.

“The first obvious positive note about the trailer itself is the level of hardcore action, reaffirming the promised R-rating (hence the red band trailer). We see everything from a cop impaled through the chest by the Predator’s wristblades, to a skinned body hanging from a tree, to a girl being pinned to the wall by a Predator shuriken, to someone’s face melted off with acid blood, to a young boy getting facehugged! It would seem that this film has a little bit of everything you’d expect to see in an AVP film. About time.”

I agree with pretty much every point raised. Only major downside was the hybrid and the way it looks. I didn’t think I’d mind the dreadlocks so much but I think now they shouldn’t have been included. But maybe the shots in the trailer were bad angles or something. Also check out Hick’s Scene By Scene Breakdown. It’s a little more detailed than my version.

OK, Aliens is my favourite film of all time.  I've seen all the films from both franchises.  I want to like this film, but ever since the first AVP, it seems they've smashed the two franchises together so that they can rot both of them into a crappy slasher pic.  Sure, it's got R-rated violence, but so what?  The whole thing's fallen so far from what it used to be.  It used to be psychologically thrilling, intelligent, and the violence helped the story.  Here, the violence is nothing but shock value.

Hicks' analysis is a bit flawed. if the predator brought the two hatchlings, where did the pred-alien come from?? hint! the first ship you saw is the ship from the first avp. need more evidence? you see the predator running from a ship thats about to explode (  he destroyed the old ship). dude, why would he destroy his own ship?   ;D

ive read that some of you think there are only 2 aliens and 1 predalien, well if you watch the preview, they show at least 3 aliens getting killed(from wat i can remember) 1 gets blasted in the head, and 2 get thier heads sliced, not only that but i highly doubt 2 aliens can run the whole town over. lets just hope this movie is better than the first, we reallly don't need another dissapointment like that
  4. Renderofveils
I find it funny that people think that the dreads on the predalien go too far.  Even in the first Dark Horse AVP comics they had dreads.  It's not something new.

Why is it so hard to believe that a predator would have trouble picking up an alien? Did you even see predator 1 and watch how easily he lifted dutch up to inspect him? Aliens are not exactly bulky heavy creatures.  Looks like this move will be quite fun to watch since they showed right of the bat the predator is merciless and willing to kill just about anything. (lol @ guy getting drenched  by acid when the predator blows the alien's head off)

If Wolf was using two arms to lift a single alien, that would be much more believable (albeit suicide) than lifting two with one each (or maybe he's on steroids   :D  ).  However, it's possible the two aliens are still standing (of course I don't know what the Strause Bros. intended and it's difficult to discern from such a quick shot). Alien warriors are typically a little under a foot taller than most predators. So either Wolf's crouched a little bit while holding them, he's unusually tall for a pred, or the Strause Bros. decided 8' foot tall alien warriors was too much.   :D    I think I have the most problem with the warriors not retaliating viciously or intelligently (especially with Wolf being directly in the "death circle" of two warriors).  I don't believe they can be classified as sentient, but they're surprisingly intelligent and very cunning. They're easily underestimated, and that's a very costly mistake.

zen is right...maybe it gets stronger with every fight won like on the game(predalien)..which of course would make it almost invincible..but totally awesome!   :P

I totaly agree with Hicks!!!.You cant judge a book by its cover!.If i were to judge every movie i saw based on the trailer,i whould never go to the theaters, rent a movie or even watch TV!.And as for the predalien:Aliens are exceptionaly hard to kill!,as are predators!,so theres no garanty that it dies!,and for that matter you dont even know if the wolf dies either!.Ive watched dozens of trailers that showed the ending, that does'nt meen that the movie was'nt good!.So how can you base every thing on this trailer and this trailer alone?!.And besides,EVERY TRAILER ON THE PLANET IS A SPOILER!!!!.

IRT YutaniDitch:  I'm far from a fanboy. This is honestly the first time in many years that I've actually had a reason to be excited about the film franchise that I've been following for 20 years.  And keep in mind, I reviewed the trailer, not the film. Most of the points you brought up (good dialogue, good acting, good story) weren't included in the trailer, so why would I review them? We couldn't get a sense of any of that in a 2 minute action-packed trailer. That's hardly whitewashing.  For someone who's critical of my thought process, you're not making a whole lot of sense yourself...

The Aliens also acted way to calm when being grabbed by the neck. They should be thrashing like crazy, not saying necessarily Wolf couldn't lift that weight, but the aliens looked at least like they were giving him way too easy a time of it. It's still a cool shot though.
  12. automirage04
I can belive that a pred could hold 2 Aliens up, one arm each.  A) They are partially submerged in water, alleviating some of the weight, which I'm guessing is about 200-250 pounds?  B) Preds are mighty. We know this. One beat the piss out of Dutch in a one on one fight, and he was a huge man.  C) The scene we saw was a second-and-a-half long. That could be the only second-and-a-half that the Aliens were being held like that. It made for a good shot to use in a trailer, but I doubt it is going to appear the same way in the movie.  Also, there HAVE to be more than two aliens, because the female lead says in the trailer that "the town is overrun". "Overrun" would be a stretch with only 2 aliens and a predalien.
  13. csutkakoma
"he fact that he's holding two by the neck with one arm each and they haven't overtaken him or are not even retaliating with their long-ass arms and tail (which have a nasty 7'-8' reach) is already very hard to believe."  Same shit everywhere...This scene is very good, and you see only a second, so relax, until you see the movie.
  14. cockroach
thought about it & in the trailer the soldier says 'its an ambush' & also how the hell would 2 aliens build the hive in such a short space of time..... im SERIOUSLY HOPING this means theres more than 2.....
  15. cockroach
so back to the old script is there only 2 aliens & a predalien? ...this can't be true? PLEASE tell me theres more than just 2 normal aliens (& this is ofcourse means no queen?!) does anyone know any different?!!! please dont let it beeee???!!
  16. Chaotic-Strike
I still have a link to the ainc review somehow they didnt check everywhere I did notice they did indeed keep alot of things in Ill wait for the green band trailer before I decide im not going to see it.
  17. Bio Mech Hunter
@ DDT...  True. Perhaps I should've rephrased myself. I'm not getting all frenetic about it, but what was shown so far shouldn't be.  I'm not passing final judgement until I actually see the film. It's just becoming more and more difficult to stay optimistic about how faithful this film is going to stay to the originals and not the comics *shutters* when stuff like this is revealed.
  18. DDT
You don't know how that situation even occurs, so calm down and wait for the movie before you compare it to anything Anderson did. There could be a number of reasons why this scene plays out that way.
  19. Bio Mech Hunter
I'm starting to think the Strause Bros. are pushing the film dangerously close to becoming a predator fanboy's wet dream. It seems like they're trying too hard to cater to that specific audience.   :-\   But I degress, it's all speculation based on incomplete evidence.   ;)   I really hope they prove me wrong.  I have to agree about the pred-alien's design, I'm not quite completely taken with it. The head is a little too big and I'm very disappointed the Strause Bros. decided that it needs the dreadlocks. *shuttters* Other than those two points, from what I've seen so far, I like it.  The breakdown seemed to me like it was just stating the obvious and was, for the most part, unnecessary. lol    :D    The Strause Bros. are pushing the believability in a few seens we've been made aware of. Namely the sewer battle between Wolf and TWO alien warriors. The fact that he's holding two by the neck with one arm each and they haven't overtaken him or are not even retaliating with their long-ass arms and tail (which have a nasty 7'-8' reach) is already very hard to believe. But adding to that the fact that he lifts BOTH warriors up with only ONE arm each?!   :o   That's absolutely absurd.   ::)   It's right up there with some of the mistakes Anderson made.

D2 | 30 Aug 2007 10:416 The script starts exactly where the last film left off. The body of SCAR, the slain predator from AVP, lies in a place of honor onboard the Predator Starship. The body convulses. Alien chestburster pops out. And then in a matter of seconds, it grows to nine feet tall, and we see the Predalien. “Shiny, elongated alien head. A Predator fang-rimmed mouth. Alien jaws. Predator body. Alien tail.”   Damn that sucks becasue it seems like the script that was bashed badly by AICN is the one that will be made as evident by the trailer.   Sucks ass.  ---------------------------- *sigh* this has nothing to do with AVP
  21. IRISH-FAN
D2 there could be a problem with that start to the movie just watched AVP recently and the figt scene at the end the queen spears the predator through the stomach and the lifts him up tearing the stomach more cud the alien survive inside this could be a bad oversight????
  22. Hicks
Thanks for the plug guys.   ;)    Oh, and I hadn't actually read your trailer analysis until after I wrote and posted my scene-by-scene breakdown...it was only then that I realized there were sort of the same format. >_>  P.S. From what I'm hearing, we may not see the Green Band online, just in theatres.
  23. zen
In my opinion, each movie with preds was good on its own.P1 was not equel to P2,same as P2 was not equel to P1,and how AVP was not equel to the others, and vise versa. Each movie is good on its own, and i hope that AVP2 is the exact same way.Who agrees with me?.(No,i am not trying to pick a fight, nor do i want one,i'm only just saying my opinion and asking the opinion of others.)
  24. carnalien
to me, the reveiw seemed as though it was just stating the obvious. but i still give hicks an A+ for effort, it is helpful to all those fans who have got a crap PC and cant watch the trailer, in other words....all three of u out there!
  25. YutaniDitch
Well, he did hava a lot to say from only one 2-minute trailer, especially deducing a whole lot from it... I know, I do that too... But his whitewashing everything was a bit much...  We don't know if the dialogues will be good or cheesy, or if the acting is good or not, nor if the story has any lasting value or if i's only there to minimally contextualise the action... We don't know squat of what is really important in any movie..  So, I have to say that that review was purely fanboyish, hasty and quite partial take on the trailer...  Also, a trailer is just pure, utter advertising...it manipulates the shots, giving them a random order, manipulating scenes, like the scene where Wolf shoots his pistol cannon, and in the next shot, the Alien is hit, and the resulting acid eats away that guy' face... So talking about manipulation...  Moreover, how he rated it is ridiculous...So having a lot of spoilers, from most human characters' deaths and Wolf being impaled and impaling the Predalien, that give away and emptifies the characters' fate already, by removing any preceding tension to find out if they survive this or that situation or not, is only worth one point removal...  That pretty much shows how much of a fanboyish approach to this trailer he had...   ::)
  26. Stealth Overture
Ive watched the trailer a few times and it seems like the same lame script, the acting's a bit dodgy, and the pred-alien looked good in the still released, but not in the movie with the dreds and big head. I really want this movie to be good! but im still not convinced.  I mean first time director's and t.v actors and a lame script, not much hope! but you never know?  p.s when is the U.K release date? Is it Jan 4?
