Now that you mention it, he does look a lot like an elf that's getting on a bit. Could he be related to Haldir?

Should have marketed this as a LOTR's flick instead.

    QFT  ;D

Now, getting back on topic , I hadn't noticed this so far, but apparently some of the big heads and statues weren't seen in the film:

Those concept matte paintings have a very Lord of the Rings/Isengard feel.

    Spoiler

lol this film begins as a sequel to Prometheus, then in an unexpected twist it turns into a Lord of the Rings flick, to finally become an Alien movie

A robot would have perfect photographic memory, though.  And no emotions, so no desire to make pretty pictures.  It's almost like David did is just to behave like a creepy serial killer, not because it makes any kind of sense.

It's almost as if David was specifically created to emulate "humans" to a degree (and to surpass them in many ways), and was given emotions, amongst which was a love of art..

It's almost as if you didnt pay attention to these films.

It's almost as if you came right out of the imdb forums.

I've been chatting to Matt Hatton recently (look out for him joining Dane Hallett on one of our future podcasts) and he's shared some badass artwork! Matt and Dane did the various sketches that David "drew" and had decorated his chamber of madness!

QuoteHeres a wierd one. Before starting on Alien:Covenant I wanted to produce some art to both G myself up and have some stuff in my back log to impress the creatives. So I did some digital paintings (they're now on the internet somewhere) but I liked this one so much that I did my 'David style' rendering of it and got it to appear in the film. It now appears as the cover of the 'Art of' book. Wierd world!

QuoteNah, it was just Fox being nervous about treading on HR's toes. It's definitively his style and if the work got too close, it might have agitated HR's estate. Everything was cleared, ultimately.

    Btw...

Does anyone else has ever seen this design of the cathedral?

The structure seems to show some kind of religious symbolism. At the gates you can see two female figures with a very biblical look. Also, there are two other human figures on the Wall. I'm getting a very Ancient Greek vibe.

Maybe it's not too late for the Space Jesús! (jk)

    Concept Art inspired by Giger?

Giger's version is one of the many paintings out there inspired by the original Arnold Böcklin painting of the 1800s. I think Giger's came out in the 70s?
Also I still wish they had based that scene more on his painting's aesthetic rather then the original one. Alas.

The pulse rifles were likely just place holders Jeremy put in the ammo locker. Was probably someone else's job to design the weapons and if those 3D models weren't available yet then he would have just grabbed something off the internet instead of wasting time modelling stuff from scratch.

    Some new art -

https://www.artstation.com/artwork/9gmNQ - set design artwork by Jeremey Love
https://www.artstation.com/artwork/erd86 - the new chestburster by Gabriel Beauvais

That hard surface design stuff from Jeremey is freaking bad ASS!! Love it! True industrial design craftsmanship.

Great sculpting by Gabriel as well, but I simply can´t except this to be a chestburster. Anyway, great job done by the artists.

I'm a big making-of book collector and I highly recommend the Covenant art book (even if you didn't like the film). It's still a real shame the suits where never used, even minimally like for for close ups  :\ cuz they looks so damn good.

This is amazing. I'm curious, should I buy the one you posted here, or should I do this one?: https://www.amazon.com/Alien-Covenant-Official-Collectors-Titan/dp/1785861921/ref=pd_sim_14_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1785861921&pd_rd_r=5J9QJWGSKFGV5YEF8YHS&pd_rd_w=w8RWt&pd_rd_wg=LDpPq&psc=1&refRID=5J9QJWGSKFGV5YEF8YHS

Is there any significant difference between the two? I mean, I'll probably end up getting both eventually; but I'm still curious as to why they released two different behind-the-scenes books.

When I saw the movie, I felt disappointed with all the CGI (expecially the xenos) and such little focus on the creatures and "birthing" scenes. Seeing all those wonderful practical suits and creature effects makes me feel somehow sorry for the audience and think "all of this could have looked so much more real - thus better...".

Look at the way they've rigging up this particular suit.

    https://www.facebook.com/StanWinstonSchool/photos/a.132306723471670.10590.130940650274944/1387129211322742/?type=3&theater

This was the radically advanced puppeteering rig they couldn't get the bugs worked out for in time, which I asked Conor O'Sullivan about on camera, for my Alien Day report.

They only had a certain number of weeks to not only design, but construct and test it. It wasn't enough. There were a small number of flaws they just didn't have tihe time to fix.

I'm guessing that all the shots we've seen of the Alien with these ultra-thin limbs were actually of this unused puppeteering rig, rather than whatever it was they went with. Can't say I'm a fan, given how thin those limbs look, but it apparently moved amazingly.
