Gameplay

AvP Evolution is a third-person action game where you can play as Aliens or Predators. The Super Predators are the main antagonists of the game. The Predator missions begin as a captured Predator who is forced into a Temple Arena trial to see how well the Super Predators can control Xenomorphs. The Alien campaign has the Super Predators attacking the Queen Alien and capturing her. They use the Alien Temple above as a training ground to enhance their skills as warriors.

Development

AvP EvolutionAngry Mob Games previously worked with Fox Digital Entertainment on 2010’s Predators mobile game and it was well-received. They started working on AvP Evolution in February 2012 and it took them exactly one year to complete it. It was made using the Unity game engine and a lot of sound effects in AvP Evolution were recycled from 2010’s Aliens vs Predator from Rebellion. Angry Mob Games did release updates to fix the technical issues such as the camera and difficulty spikes, but some updates did introduce new features. Here’s a list of the most important changes:

April 23, 2013 – Two new playable characters were added: the Berserker Alien and the Chopper Predator, and each came with their own unique new abilities. There are some new missions to play through and secret areas to discover throughout the game’s campaign. The Predator has gotten a couple of new weapons to add to his arsenal: a Shuriken and a Plasma Railgun.

September 23, 2013 – An update was released adding iOS7 optimizations including 64-bit iPhone 5S support, major performance improvements and a fix to some of the rebalancing difficulties you may have experienced.

May 8, 2014 – They released an update allowing the Predalien as a playable character. The update also includes the “Battle Generator” feature which allows players to pick their prey and customise their battles.

July 8, 2015  – Angry Mob Games released a remastered version of AvP Evolution which featured more high-detailed environments, dynamic lighting and better effects.

Reception

AvP EvolutionAvP Evolution was given somewhat mixed to negative reviews upon its release with many outlets criticising the camera, repetitive gameplay, diffuculty spikes and general technical issues. The few positives were aimed at the graphics and environments which were faithful to the franchises. MacWorld gave the game 2.5/5 criticising the clunky gameplay: “The monsters in AVP are both reduced to bumbling, clunky automatons; the only frightening aspect of the game is the prospect that I might have to review the inevitable sequel.”

PocketGamer gave it 1.5/5: “As a third-person brawler featuring unrecognisable characters, AVP: Evolution would be underwhelming. As a licensed product featuring two of the finest killers the human imagination has ever produced, it’s insulting.” RidgeTop of AvPGalaxy gave it a more positive 3.5/5 praising the graphics and environments but said it was buggy: “Overall, I had some good fun with Alien vs. Predator: Evolution and I’d recommend it to any fan. It was made with respect for the source material and is a nice little addition to the universe. It features tributes to all of the films, and there were plenty of interesting moments.”
