When David is cutting his hair, he's singing a song. "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo"
I thought it probably got picked for a reason so I did a little research.
-"The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" is a popular British music hall song of the 19th century, written in 1891 or 1892 by Fred Gilbert
-Gilbert's inspiration was the
gambler and confidence trickster Charles Wells.
-Charless Wells was a
fraudster who used several aliases and who served four prison sentences (two in Britain and two in France). He was possibly the first criminal to set up a Ponzi scheme, pre-dating the swindles of Charles Ponzi himself by ten years.
-He's one of the few to "break the bank" at the Monte Carlo Casino after which he bought a
ship and turned it into a
luxury yachtThe expression ′breaking the bank′ is used when a gambler wins more money than the reserve held at that particular table in the casino
-Charles Wells' father was a
poet and lawyer, his mother was a
school teacher. Charles was the youngest of four surviving children, and the only son.
-Some
mystery surrounds Wells' death, since reports vary as to the location. Most reports state that he died in Paris, but no firm evidence for this has been found. Sources also differ in the year of his death, but the majority give this as 1922.
-In the 1962 film
Lawrence of Arabia, Lawrence (Peter O'Toole) sings the tune while riding across the desert to the camp of Prince Faisal.
