Watched parts of Covenant again.
When David is cutting his hair, he's singing a song. "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo"
I thought it probably got picked for a reason so I did a little research.

-"The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" is a popular British music hall song of the 19th century, written in 1891 or 1892 by Fred Gilbert
-Gilbert's inspiration was the gambler and confidence trickster Charles Wells.
-Charless Wells was a fraudster who used several aliases and who served four prison sentences (two in Britain and two in France). He was possibly the first criminal to set up a Ponzi scheme, pre-dating the swindles of Charles Ponzi himself by ten years.
-He's one of the few to "break the bank" at the Monte Carlo Casino after which he bought a ship and turned it into a luxury yacht
The expression ′breaking the bank′ is used when a gambler wins more money than the reserve held at that particular table in the casino
-Charles Wells' father was a poet and lawyer, his mother was a school teacher. Charles was the youngest of four surviving children, and the only son.
-Some mystery surrounds Wells' death, since reports vary as to the location. Most reports state that he died in Paris, but no firm evidence for this has been found. Sources also differ in the year of his death, but the majority give this as 1922.
-In the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia, Lawrence (Peter O'Toole) sings the tune while riding across the desert to the camp of Prince Faisal.

;D

Interesting, thanks.

The last reason is why it's in the film - like 'No man needs nothing' and 'Big things have small beginnings'.

Nice research.  :)

Some might call it pretentious, but I like how elements like this give extra depth to a movie.

I also like the possible implications for the sequel.
David tricking the colonists that he's Walter, scheming Weyland-Yutani, a mysterious death,...
Wouldn't mind if the fate of David was ambiguous so his character could still be used. Perhaps for as some jump-off point for an Engineer movie series  ;D

Might be time for me to watch Lawrence Of Arabia. This is the second time they made a reference to it. So a third one would be logical.

Rudiger

David is Lawrence. I think that's the point they're trying to make.

Curiously, he is singing this at the same moment as when he is cutting his hair.  He is dealing with his hair while having a Lawrence of Arabia moment in both films...

Maybe I should too. I'm curious.

Neat character moment that ties back to Prometheus.  :)

Perfect-Organism

Watching L o A gives Prometheus an extra dimension.  I don't recall a thread about the significance of the connection, but I would almost say that it is required viewing for a hardcore fan.

The story of Lawrence is one of questionable loyalties.  He is torn between cultures.  He also considers pain to be negligible.  This in part forms the basis for David's character.  The idea of not minding that something hurts is just expanded upon in Covenant.  You can tell the movie has been playing in his head all this time...

Here's another little connection between Lawrence of Arabia and Prometheus:

It goes without saying that the locations are practically identical.

But there is nothing in the desert, and no man needs nothing.

Yeah its a Lawrence Of Arabia reference. Peter O Toole listens to his echo in LOA as he rides a horse through a canyon. A nice tie-in/use of mirroring, since in PROMETHEUS, David is shown watching Lawrence Of Arabia, while he lets the dye set into his hair.

Yes quite interesting in fact.

Found the scene on youtube it ties with it even more that we can think.

Watch as in Covenant, Peter O'toole is singing with an echo as well !   :o

Eerie.  I can see why David went off the rails...

Yeah definitely.

I like the depth it brings to the scene, not to say the whole picture.

David despite becoming crazy and in the Blade Runner spirit "more human than human" remains an AI and somehow being aware of this echo in his "necropole" is in a logical robotic way mimicking this Lawrence of Arabia sequence in a more preicse and pertinent way a human could do.
