In short we do not know either answer.

We see what is possibly their homeworld for a bit in AVPR but that could just be one of many worlds they live on.

That's pretty much it. They seem to fly around a lot in their spaceships and are an ancient race. Not much to go on, but its fun to speculate and maybe it's a good thing if their origin is left ambiguous.

I'm betting natural evolution around the Engineers for millions of years, accounting for how humanoid they look but then the Engineers left or died out.

How humanoid they are in the "Alien" universe has never sat well with me so that's my speculation.

In all seriousness, if their thermal vision is natural and not surgically implanted, it makes more sense for them to have come from somewhere relatively cool, otherwise they'd be permanently blinded.
