When Alien: Covenant finally hit the big screens in the United States, it opened with a fairly strong $36 million. It was on the lower end of the predicted take (around $40 million) but it was still reasonable.
Despite fairly favorable critic reviews (currently certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 71% rating), unfortunately for 20th Century Fox and fans eager to see more of Alien: Covenant’s story direction, the film’s momentum didn’t last long.
According to an article shared by Forbes last Friday, Alien: Covenant’s taking dropped a massive 80% in its second week in the States which would put it in the top 10 of the biggest second week drop-offs of all time.
Providing an update on the box office situation yesterday, Deadline reported that the latest Pirates of the Caribbean and Baywatch released to much higher numbers in the States.
“Grossing another $10.8M from 77 markets, Fox and Ridley’s Scott’s Alien: Covenant just crossed the $100M threshold after experiencing some decent holds in certain markets — Russia is still No. 2 in the market in its sophomore frame after pulling in another $1.1M this weekend, for instance.
Likewise in Germany, it’s held on well for the No. 3 spot in its second weekend where it grabbed $914K. In the UK, it took in about $939K (weekend 3) and in France $914K (also week 3).
Remember, this one still has yet to bow in China or Japan, which it will do on June 16 and Sept.. 15, respectively. Overall, it has a cume after this weekend of $101M. Its global take is $161.5M.”
It would seem that Alien: Covenant is performing better worldwide, having taken in over $100 million, but it’s looking likely that Alien: Covenant is going to struggle to read the $80 million mark in the States. It’s not looking good for Alien: Covenant or any of the potential sequels Ridley Scott has spoken about previously.
