Most of you learned lesson through A:CM. So what is your stance now?

I won't pre-order it, no matter how many bonus they throw to make you buy it.

After being burned twice by AvP 2010 and A:CM, damn right.

Avp2010 was fine. But im totally waiting for this. Unless they provide something reeeeeeally special like, omfg did u see that shit, and it attracts everyones attention on an extreme scale. Then I MIGHT consider pre ordering. But ill play it 6 months after anyway cuz games are alway cheaper that time around.

I'm waiting for the reviews. And then some for 75% off sale.  :) I'm not kidding. Though I might settle for 60. If I get a computer able to run the game.  :'(

I waited for reviews on Aliens: Colonial Marines. I'm doing the same with this. This looks like it'll be light years superior to Colonial Marines, but still.

I stopped pre-ordering since Max Payne 3, not doing it since, saved me alot of money I guess.

Its another gamble once again. Surely SOME might buy it just to explore the visuals because you can't deny they are stunning. But it is almost feature film quality give or take a minor adjustments. That is  a MAJOR challenge to take on since it is a PS4 game and that it is a SLOW PACED survival horror. Which to my knowledge only 2014 has had the opportunity to have developers working on in one year.

We either haven't seen 80 percent of the game or we are only getting this kind of game play which we have already seen. Its hard to tell.
Either way, its a new experience altogether and to me it just plays like a film. No real HUD, or known strategies applicable here. If they can't tell us straight up "head for a blinking cabinet" "toss fire extenguishers" etc etc, I basically have no shits tail what to do in this game in so far.

I don't regret any of the day one preorder purchases I've made on either AvP or CM. now, neither game was what we wanted but they were still fun in their own way. So too will Isolation. Call me a sucker but I think this one is going to be something special. Especially if the talk now is true about a "smart Alien" that reacts to you.

Absolutely.

I like what I'm seeing and hearing, I won't deny that, but no way will I be buying until I've read some post-release reviews.

Learned this the hard way.
Title: Re: Are you going to wait for reviews before buying?

I'll wait for reviews and player feedback, for several reasons.

-Gameplay isn't a genre I'm familiar with. No way of knowing if the fundamental dynamic will be compulsive entertainment for me, which with an FPS, RPG or strategy title is generally not an issue.

-Not coming from a tried-and-tested developer. I've massively enjoyed some of Creative Assembly's older strategy titles, and have been disappointed by some of their more recent ones, but these are moot points as the vast majority of the team are new to the company (and it's an entirely different genre).

-Multiplatform release, which has come to be synomymous with "compromises for PC users". Don't particularly fancy playing an unstable build with negligible post-release support, slow and clunky controls/camera/interface, poor mouse+keyboard functionality, threadbare customisation and inconsistent graphics. Lack of modding capability has become the norm, sadly, so won't affect my decision.

-Burnt by a number of disappointing pre-releases and Alien franchise games in the last few years. Part of it, admittedly, is that I'm not finding many games today that really cater to what I enjoy.

There will be reviews before it is released. Not like with CM where they knew it was a crock of shit.

Look how open CA have been already, it they have a kick ass game they will do what they have just done a month before release to hype it up.

It may well be my first day one purchase for years.

For those not getting it before reviews, yeah def wait for actual players reviews. IGN and the like write too many high scoring game reviews in this man's opinion. Just to get you to buy it lol

Absolutely. I practically never buy games on release any more, you can just wait a couple of months and get it for half the price. Not to mention the number of times I've been burned by games that claimed to be something they weren't before they came out.

These days I only get games day one if it's something I really want.

I know I should, but I'm still kind of a stupid fanboy who wants video games with Xenos in them.

This will deliver that.

Plus I'll want to buy it early so I can predownload it.

So do I. I've been burned before, but that's life. Even though we know that it'll be cheaper if we wait, some of us want it day one. Ownership is important to a lot of people, myself included.

Been using Gamefly for years. They have some decent sales on from time to time. Makes it easier than buying everything you ever "might" have wanted to play and a lot cheaper, should you have the time to devote to the hobby.

Same. I can't help myself. I knew based on the reviews I should have cancelled my pre-order of Colonial Marines, but I just had to have the damn game. I'll do the same for this. But I have a strong feeling this will be a very good game.

I need lots of footage or a convincing demo before I make a decision.

I do not usually trust reviews done by game "journalists". I'd only read user reviews and take the consensus as a factor weighing in on the choice.
Title: Re: Are you going to wait for reviews before buying?
Post by: Aceburster on Feb 15, 2014, 12:29:12 AM
Im definitely not preordering, and im not sure reviews are going to be much help either since you know its just going to be a lot of "its better than A:CM and scarier than Amnesia"  and im sure [insert screaming LP'er name here] will cloud many average gamers opinions of it.

I gotta see it in action firsthand and see how well it actually plays, or at least see the community reviews here first.

Preordering a game just because it has xenos in it isnt the best idea since many game developers will use that to earn easy money xD

Advice: Dont trust pictures and videos they show, especially if they show many trailers and promotional: Most often they try to make it look better than it is and trick you to preorder like in the case with colonial marines where they released tons of trailers and "in game" videos and no they were a bluff to make you think they were good ;)

Reviews and what other dedicated people think is the way to go and trust, only way to be sure before spending your money.

Gaming industry today is mostly just after your money not making the best game ever as some think xD
And I warned people for aliens colonial marines long before it came out and people where: OMG the trailer looks amazing, warned them it would be a terrible game but none listened....

The thing is, nowadays games tend to use the DLC gimmick to make people purchase pre-orders, at least for multiplayers. So for a single player game, either they include some physical item to justify the preorder, or else there's no point in getting it.

At the very least, we know any bonus that comes with it isn't going to be some shitty DLC that you won't bother to use once the hype wears off...

I sent a tweet to the A:I Twitter account asking about a collector's edition, if they're might be any kind of statue or anything. No reply yet, might be too soon for them to say (or they can't say). I would very much like a A:CM style collector's edition. I love the extra goodies and the statue. It's very cool in my opinion and will outlive the game by a long shot. I still play it occasionally, as well as AvP2010 and AvP2 (PC).

Title: Re: Are you going to wait for reviews before buying?

The only game I've ever pre-ordered is Skyrim, so I can safely rely on my own consumer investigation and instinct when it comes to supporting products.

But if I bought Colonial Marines on midnight at release :'( I'm damned sure going to support an Alien game trying a new, more faithful direction. I mean I love supporting different games anyway, ones that don't try and homogenize every cliche they can into a single botched 'everybody loves it' product, so Isolation is really a no-brainer.

The only thing I do know for absolute certain is that if it does suck, there's no way it will suck as hard as Colonial Marines. That thing is the true apex of failure, the X Rebirth of the Aliens license, and I declare it won't be matched for many generations to come.

Yeah I won't deny that the graphics were quite terrible. They were showing us pictures of the game before with amazing graphics and effects but the final product was just terrible and the gameplay experience was very clunky. Alien Isolation is introducing a true survival horror expierience. With tension, fantastic atmosphere and great gameplay.
