Title: Aliens: Fireteam Elite Achievements Gives Us Campaign & Difficulty Names, & New Enemy Type!
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Jun 24, 2021, 08:44:16 AM

Now that we’ve got a date to mark in our calendars for Aliens: Fireteam Elite’s release, we’ve also got a look at the game’s achievements. We now know the names of each of the four campaigns, the names of the 4 different difficulty modes and possibly the name of a new enemy category that we glimpsed in yesterday’s trailer! Beware some possible spoilers here.

So we now know that the four campaigns are Priority One, Giants in the Earth, Gift of Fire and finally Only Way to be Sure. The difficulty modes are Standard, Intense, Extreme and Insane.

And finally, it looks like there’s a new enemy category known as Pathogen, hinting at a much stronger prequel connection than just the Engineer locations! Given the required amount of kills to get the achievement, I would imagine this would be a lesser seen enemy type within the game. We may have already seen one of the Pathogen enemies in the last trailer too!

Aliens: Fireteam Elite Achievements Gives Us Campaign & Difficulty Names, & New Enemy Type!

Forgive the poor screenshot. Is this a Pathogen enemy?

The prequel novel, Aliens: Infiltrator, also heavily played with the Engineer’s black goo and its effects on native wild-life and the Aliens themselves. Thanks to seattle24 for the heads up on the news.

Based Fireteam Elite using the correct terminology.

Oh hell yes! So standard was the lowest difficulty? And they have three more difficulties above that? I see I'm gonna love this and get the cruel experience I long for! Thanks Cold Iron, that's how you give the player choices, I hope acid burns like hell.

Glad we'll see some pathogen creatures, but not too much. Didn't know we'll be killing so many synths, but story wise I get the context. One synth compared to 10 aliens feels right. I wonder what are elite enemies? Is the Praetorian one, or does that bugger count as a Xenomorph? I wonder if we'll have any boss fight or not.

I bet elites are gonna be the bigger Aliens like the Praetorians or the Big Chaps.

In context of them all, Big Chaps I wouldn't guess for "Those Things Were Huge" but Praetorians, definitely!

Awesone. It feels to me like the Giants in the Earth level is the Engineer location.

As for the Pathogen enemies, are these gonna be like Fifield zombies?!?

The Gift of Fire is clearly a reference to Prometheus and the eponymous Greek myth, so that chapter is probably heavily embedded in engineer lore too. If I had to guess, I'd say Giants in the Earth is exploring the engineer ruins, with The Gift of Fire focusing on dealing with the outbreak of the pathogen, and The Only Way to be Sure your efforts to nuke the entire site.

As for the pathogen itself, I think it's probably going to be made up of a horde of different mutations, some perhaps infecting other types of enemy in front of you. The one screenshot we have already shows a large beast with a lot of smaller ones scuttling over the wall in the background. Also, note that they use the singular "pathogen", even when referring to a collection of them, which implies that they're treated as a homogenous mass of sorts.

Ugh. The prequels ruined the mythology of the Alien. Not knowing was so much better. They were mysterious. Majestic. Terrifying. ALIEN. The prequels made them feel cheap and stupid. Which is pretty much what Ridley Scott thinks of the creature at this point. I'm all for enemy variety, but I hate the new mythology. Personal Opinion.

If anything, the pathogen adds more mystery.

People need to deal with it, they're part of the mythology now, whether they like it or not.

Correct, their asses are indeed huge.

I like that "standard" is going to be the easiest difficulty with three harder settings above that. Should certainly help with the replayability factor that's key for a game like this.

Many feel this way, including me. I guess it's fine for a nonsensical arcade style shooter like this for added variety. Surely a game like Alien Isolation 2 would ignore anything prequels.

Surely? Nonsense.

One might in fact hope that any potential Isolation 2 and Isolation 3 attempts something more new and not as derivative the following times, drawing on all of the mythology instead of just the original film, we already have that and it is perfect.

Personally I'd love something that maintained the spirit of the original Isolation but with Amanda Ripley's story being essentially done forged their own path, perhaps even something exploiting the narrative Alex White set up with Cold Forge and Into Charybdis, by drawing upon the Prequel mythology of Alien Covenant primarily whilst inhabiting a more believable reality.

That mentality "personally screw the Prequels" I find nearsighted honestly, imagine saying that about the Star Wars prequels now y'know, they still might be difficult films to sit through to put it lightly but what they gave the mythology's invaluable.

And I think you will find most people saying the same thing about the Alien prequels in ten or fifteen years if not sooner.

In fact look at The RPG, or Alex White's books, we don't get that without them.

I hope no one so casually dismisses your livelihood on the basis of not liking the related work of another artist they can ignore.

https://youtu.be/ZA3L6daKD9s

If that's an implication towards my personage though that's pretty petty and awful tbh

I did not consider it from a consumer perspective primarily but a creator one

You're being awfully melodramatic.

I'm a video editor. People dismiss my work because of other people's work all the time. I don't take it personally. It's the nature of working in a creative industry where audiences are fuelled by emotion, intuition, and their unique perspectives.

Not that I dismissed anybody; I just said I don't like the prequels and would be happy to not see their influence continue. I'm not wishing for it all to be retroactively scrubbed from existence.

I want to play this game but I dont want to see all that prequel garbage in it.  Why cant they get it through their skulls that all that crap about the big bald engineers and their magic slime just made the aliens ten times worse?

Eh, not too sure about that. I like prequels and I love Isolation but I don't want them in the same room. Isolation wasn't about the story or mythology, it was about The Experience really and in its (probably impossible at this point) sequel I would want more of that and not some deep philosophical stuff about God, humanity, creation etc

Actually, I wish Prometheus had more new-monster action, and back to the game I'm digging the trilobite-like beast and I'm glad the prequel lore remains active, despite the divided reception.

I think I'd prefer it if the goo was used to create all the word and whacky enemies, and the Aliens were left to their film iterations and treated as the tougher enemy.

Sort of like how Metroid games typically feature very little Metroid, but when they do they're a nightmare.

I am not saying it ought to imitate the Prequels, just use their ideas, just that a valid criticism I witnessed levied against Isolation being that it is overly derivative of the original film.

Personally I felt it got by on that, and the strength of the experience as you rightly say, and it inhabiting a world that felt like a natural expansion felt correct also because of the theme of closure surrounding Ellen Ripley's fate running through the narrative.

With that completed I think Amanda Ripley's arc's fulfilled and as the expanded universe showed us, you can make her go on other adventures, but the character itself's got nowhere to go.

So I think if another one ever got the greenlight, they have to embrace the whole mythology and create their own unique take on a colony or prison or both, or something completely new the successive times and that goes not just for the environments but thematically and narratively without a Ripley.
