He may have escaped fighting the Predator, but James Franco hasn’t been able to avoid the Alien! Alien vs. Predator Galaxy can exclusively reveal that James Franco will be making an appearance in Alien: Covenant.

We reported back in July that his agency was pushing hard for James Franco to be cast as McKenna, the lead role in The Predator. Franco apparently passed on that role to appear in a different science fiction film called Kin. That hasn’t stopped Franco from appearing alongside his long-time collaborator, Danny McBride, as a member of the crew of the Covenant though!

Franco will be appearing in Alien: Covenant as Branson, the captain of the Covenant and husband of Katherine Waterson’ Daniels. Franco’s appearance in Alien: Covenant will only be brief, though. He appears in the first ten minutes or so of the film with later small appearances.

Franco will also be reprising the role as Branson in some of the viral footage that has been shot for Alien: Covenant.

I'm thankful it's a minor role lol Though to be honest I haven't seen him in a serious film before (127 Hours, for example, was critically acclaimed) so, I know he can act.

He'll die horribly, that's for sure. ;D

Um, ok, can't say that I'm thrilled, but as long as it isn't a distracting inclusion that takes you out of the movie, it would of been weird have he of been cast in The Predator thus appearing in both movies as different characters, it would be like when Bill Paxton appeared as Private Hudson in Aliens and as Detective Jerry Lambert in Predator 2.

This is fantastic. Franco is an amazing actor and since missing out on Prometheus and The Predator(he's a better actor than most of this franchise's actor), it's nice for him to finally join the universe.

I'm not a fan of Franco.  My partner strongly dislikes him as an actor.  She excitedly asked me if I expect him to get facehugged.  Most interested she's been in this movie so far.

If people are having doubts of Franco's credibility as a serious actor then they should really do themselves justice and checkout Gus Van Sants MILK.Terrific performance from Franco who holds his own against a very inform Sean Penn.

Im OK with this. Ive seen him lead in 127 hours and support as the love interest in Milk, so I think he's a darned sight better than some reality-turned "super"star actor.

I would have actually preferred to have Franco as Holloway in Prometheus rather than Logan Marshall -Green.

We know that the Covenant ship stays in orbit while the crew lands on Paradise and then later returns to the Covenant. So my thinking based on what we saw in the leaked stuff, is there drop ship explodes and they can't get off the surface. Who knows maybe The Covenant itself, loses communications and never learns what happens to the crew on the surface of Paradise.

Which brings to mind - What is the name of this Planet they find? Its not LV223 or 426 of course so, will it be called PARADISE?

Subtle details like these make me appreciate Aliens even more; even though it and Alien are night and day, they share some overlapping qualities.

Ah I think I've got it now. The landing party escapes Paradise using the Derelict and then attaches itself to the Covenant when the Alien busts out. Some things happen but then the Covenant with the Derelict on top crash on LV 426. Meaning that Cave down below is not the Derelict but the Covenant!

Never been the biggest fan of Franco but I don't hate him.  He's about on par with Charlize Theron for me.  He's certainly no Charles Dance, Tom Skerrit or Michael Wincott.  Glad he's not the lead.

Franco it´s an amazing actor, check Milk or 127 hours. Ridley has a great eye.

That he does. He turned out a great performance from Nic Cage in Matchstick Men. I think he can pull another rabbit out of a hat, with Franco. Franco's the sort of actor that is good, but just needs a little bit of a push, every now and then.

At least this explains how he manages to reappear later in the film even though he's dead. So it's probably safe to assume he isn't a zombie.  :)

He will die of an explosion on the ship and that will make them go to the planet as i read somewhere.
But looking at Wikipedia Franco was already on there last night, and reading the movie discription,
the only survivor on the hostile planet is David, and reading up on Scott he said these movies will lead up to the events of Alien,
and we will come to find out who made the xenomorphs, so the easiest guess in this it will all be David/Fassbender,
the creator of these creatures, if im correct the xenomorph is or has some robot aspects (i dont know how you call it in English)
in where the engineers failed to create the ultimate weapon, David succeeds.
And the theory of White Rabbit could be close also that the Derelict is on the Covenant and that the cargo hold are the Covenant crew turned into eggs.
Following this theory this could be the ultimate let down of the whole Alien series.

haha no way could that be true however I am starting to worry that David might have actually created the modern prometheus and that would be a let down. If a facehugger rapped him and that's how it got it's biomechanical look, I can live with that. Since for a long time we had guessed that the alien got the look from the alien pilot. Of course most of us assumed that the space jockey was the biomechanical donation....

I kind of hope that David is the creator of the xenomorph. It'll truly be the Hollywood version of the gnostic texts. David is the demi-urge, and the xenomorph is his archon. The engineers are the aeons, and paradise is an extension of the pleroma. We see the beginning of gnostic influence in Prometheus when Shaw is impregnated. She is Sophia, birthing what will eventually become the demi-urge. It's more metaphorical, but the subtext is definitely there.

Thanks for that. A lot of us are aware that there is a gnostic influence on Prometheus, but I don't recall ever seeing it broken down so simply for those of us (like myself) who are not well-versed. However, if Shaw is Sophia, how can David be her offspring? My pet theory is that they reversed the gender tropes in this one, so Shaw is the knight in shining armor and David in the damsel. Could David be Sophia, or possibly Peter Weyland? I guess I'm confused lol

There's no way that Dallas could have accurately deduced that the space jockey was in fact fossilized.  He could have been quite wrong about that.

Well in the leaked set pics the engineers all appeared to have been Pompeii'd or outright petrified. No reason to think that the same thing didn't happened to the Space Jockey from Alien. It's possible that all those engineers were alive when David got to Paradise and not leftovers from a battle log ago. So yea, the derelict could only be a few years crashed when the Nostromo arrives.

Yeah Dallas never established whether it actually was fossilized, just that it looked fossilized. 

Yep, it was just his best educated guess. Nothing more, nothing less.

Moreover, what looked like the skin of the creature in the space jockey's chair turned out to be just a shell as per Prometheus.  So if Dallas deduced that the creature was fossilized on the basis of it being hard, he would be wrong.  He also never took his gloves off..

What's interesting about that, is that there is the implication that somewhere on the derelict, there may be a live, dormant, hibernating, alien.

It very well could be hibernating on the ship but I'd like to think that perhaps it does the explosive spore cocoon thing and the eggs are freely distributed in that manner. Why they are so perfectly spaced? The eggs just positioned themselves that way on there own.

One of the tweets mentioned something about the alien having a new trick that explains how they get around the ship so easily. I'm thinking box alien and being able to soften themselves up into a near goo like substance.

That'd be INSANE, imagine the beast just disassembling into some nightmarish, writhing bio-mechanical blob before reassembling back into shape.

Perfect organism.

Kind of like the T-1000, except biological, which goes all the way back to Lovecraft and his pesky Shoggoths.

I was thinking sort of like the flexibility the Deacon showed while being born in Prometheus but there was also concept art of an alien slimming it's way through ductwork. So, yea, very lovecraftian.

Nope the ship on LV 426 was meant to be 1000s off years old and the space jokey are not large people they just change it ( and ruined it ) I really hope Daved is not the creator off the "ALEN"

Indeed, and Ridley's totally going to use it this time.

Wouldn't surprise me, Spaihts had some inspired ideas with those new xenos.

Now that Prometheus has steered back towards more Alien territory, I've no doubt that we'll be seeing a resurface of ideas from Spaihts' script. Prometheus seemed to recycle a lot of old Alien elements so it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Ridley Scott's such a hack, always ripping off Ridley Scott's ideas.

It's funny when Prometheus came out and how the black goo reminded people of X-Files. And now this "squeezing through tight gaps" thing; it reminds me of the episodes about Tombs - a guy that would squeeze through impossibly tight gaps.

I'm not keen on aliens squeezing through tight gaps.  Don't know why.  Just seems wrong.  It's been implied that aliens have an exoskeleton of sorts.  Now if that goes soft, there's another pieces of lore that goes out the window...

I think it's more in reference to the Neomorphs, but I'm not sure. As far as the Giger type Alien/s, it would kinda explain how something 8ft tall can so effortlessly move through vents and such. Maybe they can compact themselves but only to a certain point.

As PsyKore says, it's the Neomorphs that'd be able to do this if anything. We already know they're reusing some elements of Spaihts' proto-Aliens for the Neomorphs.

Odds are the alien that folds itself into a box is going to make an appearance.

Actually I don't know if this is dumb or not, but maybe the alien can drop it's head and then quickly reform it's body. You know, something freakish like that.

You know what, I'd love to see the box Alien make a reappearance.

Agree with you there . Virtually all alien lore is gonna expire.

We created a android that created the alien from the neomorph and goo and android DNA based on his own programming and becomes more human (gets a soul) . Maybe that's how Shaw meets her parents David now uses his spiritual side to create a heaven for her. )

An engineer escapes paradise with a juggernaut filled with eggs but most of them are David's facehuggers that was created from the new  bio mechanical xeno's and infects an engineer just as he climbing into his chair and his suit closes around him. Since he interfaces with the ship on a biological level via the telescope thing before him he carries the new bio mechanic DNA of the xeno growing inside him and he transfers that to the ship . The ship changes form and becomes bio mechanic. The engineer  suits also start to grow like the xono inside it and when the engineer comes  too he realises he will die and crashes the ship or lands it and set up a warning . The ship 's damaged part has an opening and the eggs start to grow in to an empty cave below the ship . the ship crows with them into the cave .

Is that where we  are going?

Huda it reminds me of what Val said about much of alien's staying power coming from the mystery of the space Jockey.

I certainly hope it doent go that way.

I am going to be very disappointed if all the mystery elements ends up being David's doing and therefore man's .

That's gonna be really lame.

The whole point about the space jockey was that is came from somewhere else and was beyond are understanding.

This is virtually directly the opposite.

Well, there was originally a scene scripted for the first film where the Alien would've unfolded from a box-like shape when Ripley discovered it, but they never filmed it. Odds are the Fifield scene was inspired by it.

Seems like he knows a little bit about the setting and mood of the movie, but hopefully if he plays a bigger role it will transfer over into the film. Hopefully, Danny McBride too.

Y'know, I kinda wish that Bryan Cranston was making an appearance in this movie, rather than James Franco!  I hope Franco's role is minimal to be honest,

Cranston even has a bit of a Ridley look going on here, don't you think?

Franco looked disappointed. I think he was genuinely hoping for it to remain a surprise.

I agree. He almost seemed pained when he heard that. Poor baby. :P
