Kwei is a powerful Yautja warrior and the older brother of the protagonist, Dek, appearing in the 2025 film Predator: Badlands. He was designed by Studio Gillis, with visual effects contributions from WETA.

Appearance

Kwei is noted for his significantly larger size and build compared to his younger brother, Dek. Kwei’s armour is distinctive, featuring unique, bone-crafted shoulder pads. Kwei’s dreadlocks are longer and come out the top of his head and down the sides. Compared to the Yautjas Jungle Hunter and City Hunter, Kwei has less of his crown visible due to the dreadlocks.

Biography

The Pelkonen IV Incident

As a test, Dek’s father, Njohrr, tasked Dek with retrieving a piece of ancient technology – a Power Core – from a derelict spaceship that had crashed 10,000 years prior on the moon of Pelkonen IV. Kwei and Dek travelled to the moon and observed the target from a distance. Kwei left Dek to attempt the mission alone, departing on a Predator Bike. Dek ultimately failed to retrieve the Power Core, causing the derelict to explode. Kwei returned to rescue his brother, picking him up just before a secondary, larger explosion consumed the site. They immediately returned to Yautja Prime.

Yautja Prime

Kwei was the highly favoured elder son of Clan Leader Njohrr. Despite the clan’s rigid obsession with strength, Kwei showed genuine affection for his younger brother, Dek, who was seen as a runt due to his smaller size. Kwei mentored Dek, training him to survive and offering him a fixed Shoulder Cannon to use on his first hunt.

Dek chose the planet Genna – the Death Planet – as his hunting ground, seeking to kill the ‘unkillable Kalisk’ to earn his father’s approval.

The Sacrifice and Death

As the brothers planned Dek’s journey, their father, Njohrr, arrived and immediately chastised Kwei for sparing Dek’s life, deeming the younger son a liability whose only honourable contribution would be his death. Njohrr rejected Kwei’s defence of Dek, restrained Dek, and ordered Kwei to execute him.

Kwei refused to do it and instead freed his brother from the restraints and activated Dek’s zip line to allow Dek to escape in his ship. As Njohrr fired his shoulder cannon at the fleeing Dek, Kwei deflected the blast with his wrist shield. Kwei and Njohrr fight.

Njohrr quickly overpowered Kwei, slicing off his arm. Kwei crawled to his wrist computer and successfully activated Dek’s ship launch sequence. Njohrr then delivered the fatal blow by impaling Kwei through the chest and then beheading him. Kwei’s sacrifice allowed Dek to flee Yautja Prime for Genna.

Personality and Traits

Kwei held a highly respected position as the favoured son of Njohrr. Kwei showed deep empathy and affection for his younger brother, actively mentoring him and encouraging his survival. He refused Njohrr’s command to execute Dek. His subsequent death encouraged Dek to succeed in his hunt on Genna.

Weapons and Equipment

Kwei utilised a sword and wrist blades in combat. During his final confrontation with his father, he was seen using a wrist-mounted shield to block a plasma cannon shot. He also possessed a cloaking device.

In Other Media

Kwei appears in the 2025 comic book Predator: Badlands, where he helps Dek retrieve some technology from a derelict spacecraft.

Behind-The-Scenes

Kwei was portrayed by former New Zealand basketball player Mike Homik. His overall look was created through a sophisticated combination of practical costuming worn by Homik and detailed digital effects by WETA FX to ensure expressiveness.
