Explosive Worms (Predator: Badlands)
Posted by Darkness on November 23, 2025 (Updated: 30-Nov-2025)
The Explosive Worms are small, volatile larval creatures present on the planet Genna that self-detonate when disturbed or violently agitated. They appear in the 2025 film, Predator: Badlands.
Appearance and Biology
The worms are typically found resting on the leaves of Genna’s flora. They are bright green in colour. They feature numerous small, visible pockets or nodules running along their backs. When disturbed, these pockets immediately begin to expand and glow with an intense, warning red bioluminescence. A few moments later, once the pockets reach their maximum size, the entire creature detonates in an explosion.
Role in Predator: Badlands
The Explosive Worms are examples of the dangerous indigenous creatures that Dek learns to exploit on Genna.
Initial Discovery and Testing
The Yautja Dek first discovers the worms when he is healing himself and resting. He observes one on a broad, lily-pad-like leaf and picks it up. The worm instantly begins to expand, and its pockets glow red. Dek quickly throws it across the river, where it explodes on impact.
The Biological Landmine
Later, when Dek is preparing for the attack on the Weyland-Yutani base, he uses a large collection of the worms to create a highly effective trap. He combines them with the Puffer Plant and wraps the Explosive Worms around the plant’s spikes. This creates a shrapnel effect. When the Weyland-Yutani synthetics approach, the Spray Snake (Squirt) on Dek’s shoulder spits corrosive acid at the Puffer Plant. This causes the plant to explode, firing the explosive-wrapped needles at the synthetics, successfully eliminating them all.
Abilities
- Self-Detonation: The ability to explode when disturbed.
- Bio-Luminescent Warning: The worms’ bodies glow red immediately before detonation.
Behind The Scenes
The Explosive Worms, like much of Genna’s hostile environment, were designed by Weta FX to emphasise the danger of the planet.
