The Spray Snake, also called imbre anguis, is an eel-like creature that lives near a river and can spit a corrosive substance when threatened. The Yautja Dek was able to befriend one and use it as a makeshift Shoulder Cannon. They appear in the 2025 film, Predator: Badlands.

Appearance and Biology

The Spray Snakes are dual-environment creatures that prefer riverbank habitats. They possess a dark-purple or brown hide, giving them an eel-like appearance, though they are equipped with numerous short, paddle-like legs running along the underside of their bodies. At the front of their head are two fins. Their most notable feature is their ability to project a highly corrosive substance from their mouth, which can rapidly eat through materials, including the advanced synthetics of the Weyland-Yutani.

Role in Predator: Badlands

First Encounter and Forging a Bond

As Dek and Thia are trekking through a river surrounded by cliffs, they encounter numerous Spray Snakes that spit a corrosive substance at them. Thia throws some berries, which distract the creatures and allow them to pass unharmed. Later, when preparing for the attack on the Weyland-Yutani base, Dek returns to the river and befriends one of the Spray Snakes by offering it food. This particular snake, “Squirt,” forms a symbiotic bond with the Yautja.

The Makeshift Shoulder Cannon

The befriended Spray Snake is used by Dek as a makeshift, living Shoulder Cannon. Squirt is secured to Dek’s shoulder and is used extensively during the battle at the Weyland-Yutani base. Numerous synthetics are quickly destroyed by the corrosive substance in the creature’s spit. Dek lures dozens of synthetics to his location and then uses the creature’s acid substance to explode two Puffer Plants, containing needles wrapped with explosive worms. The numerous needles and exploding worms kill all the synthetics.

Sacrifice

During the climax of the battle, Tessa appears in a huge Power Loader, with Dek’s original shoulder cannon, and fires a shot. The Spray Snake jumps into the path of the blast, sacrificing itself to protect Dek.

Abilities

• Highly Corrosive Spit: The acid substance can destroy synthetic materials and armour.

• Mobility: The creatures use short legs and fins to navigate both riverbeds and cliffs.

• Symbiotic Relationship: Dek was able to form a close relationship with one of them.

Behind The Scenes

The Spray Snake that Dek befriended was nicknamed “Squirt” on set. It was designed by Studio Gillis, who wanted to showcase Dek’s ingenuity and adaptability by having him use the local Genna life, like Squirt, to create new tools and weapons.
