The Kalisk (XX0522) (Predator: Badlands)
Posted by Darkness on November 13, 2025 (Updated: 25-Nov-2025)
The Kalisk, or XX0522, is a colossal, apex predator native to the planet Genna that the Yautja Dek pursues as his ultimate trophy. It is eventually destroyed by the synthetic Tessa when she freezes the Kalisk and shatters the creature. It appears in the 2025 film Predator: Badlands.
Appearance
A very young Kalisk (“Bud”) is no more than a few feet tall and generally walks on two legs. It frequently spends its time in the tree tops and is capable of rolling around in a ball. It has a very hard shell. Despite its size, it is still strong, capable of tearing synthetics apart. It can grow quickly.
An adult Kalisk is an enormous, blue beast that moves on four legs. Its body is covered in spikey, chitinous hairs across its head, back, and it possesses a powerful tail. Its head features two prominent eyes and a mouth armed with multiple, jagged sets of teeth, and features a long, fork-like tongue which it uses to grasp its prey.
Biography
Discovery and Classification
The Kalisk has resided on the planet Genna for some time. Both Weyland-Yutani and the Yautja are aware of its presence, and Weyland-Yutani has designated it the classification “XX0522.” Weyland-Yutani dispatched an all-synthetic research team to the planet Genna to capture the creature so its regenerative abilities can be studied and used to help mankind. They landed on the planet two years prior and built a base. Synthetic Thia was confined to the laboratory while her synthetic sister Tessa was out in the field, learning more about the planet and its indigenous life.
The Weyland-Yutani Incident
Prior to the Yautja Dek’s arrival, Tessa decided to bring Thia along on a scouting trip with her and other military synthetics. They encountered the Kalisk, which destroyed Weyland-Yutani equipment, disabled several synthetics, severed Thia in half, and nearly destroyed Tessa.
Dek vs Kalisk
After Dek brings Thia back to the site of the Weyland-Yutani battle, she finds her legs and begins to reattach them in a nearby unit. Thia reveals the true mission to Dek: Weyland-Yutani was here to capture the Kalisk. Dek is furious as he wants to kill the Kalisk and take its trophy back to Yautja Prime.
Dek goes outside to find the creature and uses gasoline to create an explosion, which lures the Kalisk to the wreckage. Dek wields his sword and prepares to battle the creature. The Kalisk and Dek fight and he breaks the tip of his sword. Dek uses a vehicle’s door as a shield and slices the Kalisk’s underbelly with his sword.
He throws his shuriken at the beast, which explodes in its face. As it turns around, Dek slices off its tail and it simply regenerates. After throwing Dek into Thia’s unit, the Kalisk grabs him with its tongue-like appendage. As it pulls Dek to its mouth, Dek severs its tongue and frees himself. Thia uses a nearby gun and shoots the Kalisk. As the Kalisk charges towards Thia, Dek throws a chain into its mouth. He operates a machine and it drags the Kalisk towards him. Dek runs towards Thia and grabs the gun.
Dek fires at the beast, which uses its tail as a weapon. Dek traps its tail in a unit and he runs on the Kalisk’s back. He pounces toward its head and uses his sword to decapitate the beast. It still regenerates and reattaches its head to its body. The Kalisk restrains Dek and is about to kill him when it smells the scent of its offspring, Bud, on his body. Tessa and her team arrive and she throws one of Dek’s spherical ice grenades she found earlier, which completely freezes the Kalisk and Dek. Thia, Dek, and the Kalisk are transported back to Weyland-Yutani’s main base.
Climax and Final Demise
After Dek realises that Bud is the offspring of the Kalisk, he must save Thia and free the Kalisk. Dek launches an attack on the base and kills dozens of synthetics. Thia is reunited with her missing legs and discovers who Bud really is. The Kalisk is loaded into a ship for transportation off-world. Tessa uses an enormous Power Loader and attacks Dek. While they are battling, Thia frees the Kalisk, and the beast joins in on the attack against Tessa.
Tessa thrusts a saw through the Kalisk, and Dek sabotages the Power Loader from behind. The saw stops spinning, and the Kalisk removes the saw from its body using its tail. Tessa throws another spherical ice grenade towards the Kalisk, which Dek knocks into the Power Loader’s arm. It freezes the arm completely, and the Kalisk completely destroys the Power Loader.
As Tessa is about to fire another shoulder cannon shot, the Kalisk seemingly destroys her and flips the Power Loader over. The Kalisk and her child, Bud, reunite. Tessa, who is still alive, uses another spherical ice grenade against the Kalisk, which freezes it and the Kalisk shatters.
Abilities
- Regeneration: The Kalisk is capable of extreme, near-instantaneous regeneration. In the battle with Dek, Dek sliced off its tail and tongue, and it managed to simply grow new ones. Even when Dek managed to decapitate the monster, its body immediately reattached its head. Tessa called the Kalisk a “regenerative miracle.”
- Strength & Endurance: It is virtually immune to gunfire. During the initial encounter with Weyland-Yutani forces, the creature endured heavy gunfire. Even the sword wielded by Dek could only pierce its skin temporarily, as its rapid regeneration healed its wounds.
- Agile: Despite its enormous size, the Kalisk is surprisingly fast and agile, capable of pouncing and moving like a cat.
- Empathy: The Kalisk displays a degree of sentience and social bonding, as seen through its offspring, Bud. While adults are very aggressive predators, they possess a limited capacity for empathy. The adult Kalisk recognised that Thia and Dek were accompanying its child, Bud, and formed a bond with Dek before it was killed.
Life Cycle
- Diet: Feeds on Bone Bison.
- Longevity: Impossible to determine, given its regenerative capabilities.
- Reproduction: Unknown. It’s possible the Kalisk reproduces asexually.
- Population: It seems doubtful that there is more than one adult Kalisk on Genna, as the Yautja were aware of its unique presence.
Behind The Scenes
Director Dan Trachtenberg, special effects expert Alec Gillis, and Weta FX blended diverse influences for the Kalisk’s design, drawing inspiration from both real and fictional beasts. These included the creatures found in Hayao Miyazaki films, the massive scale of monsters in video games like Shadow of the Colossus, and the unique forms of deep-sea creatures.
Trivia
- XX0522, which is the classification code that Weyland-Yutani uses for the Kalisk, is a nod to the Xenomorph code XX121. This was used in 2024’s Alien: Romulus.
- The Kalisk is known as the “unkillable” creature because its extreme regenerative abilities allow it to survive wounds that would be instantly fatal to almost any other organism.
