The creature known as Bud is an infant Kalisk (XX0522) from the planet Genna who becomes the unlikely companion of the young Yautja warrior, Dek, and the Weyland-Yutani synthetic, Thia. Bud proves to be a strong and resilient ally, eventually helping Dek prove his father wrong on Yautja Prime. Bud appears in the 2025 film Predator: Badlands.

Appearance and Abilities

A young Kalisk is no more than a few feet tall and generally moves around on two legs. Its skin is dark and its body is encased in a hard, chitinous shell that offers protection from damage.

• Bipedal Movement: Unlike an adult Kalisk, Bud is primarily bipedal, often using its shell for defence by rolling into a ball.

• Strength: Despite its size, Bud is still very strong. It is capable of tearing apart synthetics.

• Rapid Growth: The creature grows quickly. By the time Dek, Thia, and Bud return to Yautja Prime after the battle on Genna, Bud has grown substantially.

Biography

An Unlikely First Contact

Bud is first encountered by Dek and Thia on Genna when Dek and Thia observe Bone Bison in the razor grass. Bud drops down from a tree and then rolls off into the grass. This startles the Bone Bison. Dek manages to latch onto one but is thrown off in the forest. Bud rolls past him and climbs a tree. Dek lunges and grapples with Bud. The Bone Bison returns and charges at Dek and Thia. Dek manages to slice it in two and Bud is in awe at the feat.

A Luna Bug then appears and drags Dek and Thia into the tree tops to its mouth. Bud springs into action and forms a ball inside its mouth. When the Luna Bug bites down on Bud’s hard shell, it writhes in pain and lets Dek and Thia go. The Luna Bug chases after Dek, Thia and Bud towards the razor grass field. Dek and Thia stop at the field while Bud rolls into the razor grass. The Luna Bug goes in pursuit and manages to capture Bud. Just then, Dek leaps onto the creature from the tree and kills it.

Marking the New Clan

Thia, Dek and Bud are at a campfire. Thia gives Bud her nickname and reveals that Bud is female. Dek gives her some of the Bone Bison to eat and Bud spits on Dek. Thia indicates it’s because she’s marking him and wants him to be part of her clan. Bud starts imitating Dek and they go to sleep for the night. The next morning, Dek leaves Bud sleeping despite Thia’s protests and they go off in search of the Weyland-Yutani wreckage site.

Reunion and Realisation

After Dek escapes from Tessa, he prepares for battle by using the flora and fauna on the planet. He returns to the Weyland-Yutani wreckage site where he battled the Kalisk and finds Bud. Dek realises that Bud is actually the Kalisk‘s child. Dek frees Thia’s legs and they wander off as Dek and Bud watch them leave.

Dek and Bud launch their attack on the Weyland-Yutani base and kill many synthetics between them. After Thia reattaches her legs, she reunites with Dek and Bud. Dek reveals that Bud is the offspring of the Kalisk and he must free the Kalisk.

Mother’s Sacrifice

Thia and Bud observe the ship where the Kalisk is being held. As Dek kills more synthetics and battles Tessa, who is now in a huge Power Loader. Thia attempts to free the Kalisk. A Weyland-Yutani synthetic stops her and she pretends to be her sister Tessa. The synthetic spots Bud, who is wearing a jacket and Thia knocks him out. They free the Kalisk and it joins the battle against Tessa.

After Tessa is seemingly destroyed, the Kalisk goes over to Bud, who is standing with Dek and Thia. Bud and his mother have a touching moment. Dek goes over and bonds with the Kalisk. Tessa reappears and uses an ice grenade to freeze the Kalisk and shatter her.  Bud is saddened by the death of his mother. Dek uses a frozen shard from the Kalisk to impale Tessa, killing her once and for all. Bud then pulls her head off.

The Final Blow

Dek returns to Yautja Prime to confront his father and clan leader, Njohrr, to avenge his brother Kwei. When Njohrr refuses to grant Dek a cloaking device, Dek fights, disarms and restrains his father. It is Bud, now substantially larger, who delivers the final blow, biting off Njohrr’s head.

Behind The Scenes

Special effects expert Alec Gillis explained the primary design challenge for Bud: “The challenge behind creating Bud was knowing what she’d evolve into.” Gillis created a creature that seems harmless at first but later reveals its true, dangerous nature.

• Murloc Inspiration: Director Dan Trachtenberg confirmed that the design and concept for Bud were partially inspired by the Murloc creatures from the World of Warcraft video game series.

• A Thematic Contrast: Bud and his mother were deliberately created to offer a strong thematic contrast. While Dek and Thia struggle with issues with their own family, the Kalisk and Bud show the strongest familial bond in the entire movie.

• Dropped Concept: An early conceptual idea was that Bud would be a “Gremlin-like” creature that would eventually grow and molt into the adult Kalisk, but this supernatural concept was scrapped in favour of the more grounded (and emotionally resonant) mother-child relationship.
