The Bone Bison is a species of large, four-legged creatures native to the planet Genna, and features bony armour and a trunk. It appears in the 2025 film Predator: Badlands, where one is successfully hunted by the Yautja Dek.

Appearance and Biology

The Bone Bison is a massive, brown, quadrupedal creature. Its body is covered in thick, dark hair with exposed bone material around its body. It has multiple eyes set within its head with a bony carapace on its face.

This armour protects its face and acts as a shield. When closed, the carapace fully encloses and safeguards its facial features. The Bone Bison has a powerful trunk-like appendage that replaces the typical snout. The end of this trunk features sharp claws, which the creature actively uses for foraging for food.

Adaptations

The bony armour is an evolutionary adaptation that allows the Bone Bison to navigate Genna’s environment, particularly in areas covered by razor grass, which would severely injure less-protected creatures. The ability to open and close its carapace provides a flexible shield, only opened to get food.

Biography

The Bone Bison is first encountered by the Yautja Dek, who lands on Genna to hunt the powerful Kalisk. Dek, joined by the synthetic Thia, comes across a herd of Bone Bison grazing in a field of deadly razor grass.

The hunt begins after a small creature, which Thia names Bud, startles the herd. Unable to cross the razor grass on foot, Dek climbs the trees and leaps from above onto the back of one of the running creatures. The Bone Bison rushes into the surrounding forest, but Dek and Thia are knocked off when it crashes into a tree.

The creature returns and charges at Dek and Thia. The Bone Bison opens its protective bony carapace to reveal its face and eyes. Dek throws his sword into the creature’s exposed face, instantly cleaving it in two and killing it.

Abilities

• Bony Shield: Its protective bony carapace and structures allow it to seek food safely in hazardous environments like the razor grass.
• Trunk: It possesses a flexible trunk-like appendage terminating in claws.

Behind The Scenes

The creature was designed by special effects veteran Alec Gillis (known for his work on the original Alien and Predator films) in collaboration with Director Dan Trachtenberg and Weta FX. The design philosophy behind the Bone Bison was due to the concept of the planet Genna being the “deadliest planet in the universe,” with the Bone Bison’s armour, a necessary evolutionary adaptation to survive the environment.

Trivia

• The synthetic Thia says that the Bone Bison is a natural food source for the more dangerous, elusive Kalisk.
• The Yautja Dek later utilises the corpse of the Bone Bison, crafting a mask from its skull and bones, which he wears while infiltrating the Weyland-Yutani facility.
