After a wildly successful theatrical run, Alien: Romulus has kept its legs going into 2025 on streaming. As of today, January 23nd, according to FlixPatrol, Alien: Romulus has the highest viewership of any movie on the Disney+ streaming platform worldwide, just passing The Lion King (remake) which held the top spot as of yesterday.

The film has also surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine to become the most watched R rated film on the platform. Its success is still largely due to its strong international performance, as the film isn’t within the top ten in the US, but tops the charts in other countries including the United Kingdom, Spain, and Switzerland.

Romulus also had a strong release on physical media late last year. A sequel is currently being developed by director Fede Álvarez and his writing partner Rodo Sayagues.

More than Moana 2 and Deadpool?

That is shocking, given their huge box office success.

And well f**king deserved! There are things I would have done differently, but this film really reignited my passion and I'm glad to see it continuing to succeed!

Hell yeah! Same here. I pray Fede officially signs on for the sequel soon - I would have done a couple of things differently as well, but I really think Fede will pay due diligence to the sequel in terms of what ticked off hardcore fans. Romulus deserves its place as the third most successful film in the franchise, and Fede has earned another crack, for sure.

Is this a good or bad thing for Fede as an artist? Like Hicks said about wrong lessons learned, will this be more pressure to sign on and be handcuffed to the decisions of the execs as Romulus 2 will be seen as a star/cash cow for the studio? I'm sure Fede like David had with Alien 3 lots of run-ins with top management and now the studio can say told you we were right. Personally I want to see a him given a big budget and the freedom to make his movie how he wants to but with all this cash involved ...

I re-watched Romulus now that it's on Disney+. It was my second viewing after seeing it in theaters. It affirmed what I really liked and what I found iffy. Enjoyed it a lot again and found myself to be much less conflicted than right after the 1st time. Happy to see it's success continue!
