Was Gorman being incompetent ,

and soldiers thinking they knew  what was waiting them only to realize the horror when they saw action

are they references to the Vietnam war and what happened to soldiers in that war?

I have heard stories from soldiers here in SA that the government only made war with Angola to have a reason make weaoons to sell on the international market.

So if these story elements were written into the story by Cameron what was the reason for it?

Was it the company sending Gorman simply because they wanted an inexperienced
officer there ?

Am I making too much of it?

All these have been discussed before.

Cameron has said that he wanted the Marines to be like drafted infantry for the Vietnam war.  Wielding technically superior gear but in a battle they wanted no part of against an enemy with more drive than they had.

The Gorman being influenced by Burke because he's young and green has been theorized as well.

I actually think Apone as the senior NCO should've been in his ear more to help him make better decisions.

It's not about believing Ripley, it's about Gorman's bad judgment on everything.  He then sent his marines into the hive without their pulse rifles even after they had PROOF that Ripley was telling the truth.

so it was just a cultural reference at the current time ? nothing more? was it not supposed to indicate some kind "on purpose" sending the people an asshole so that they may die a possible cop out way to say well the guy in charge messed up not our fault. like in alien where  they on pupose sent innocent people to investigate an organism that was supposed to be secured no matter the cost to the crew or they themselves be lost. ?  Did alien the movie have anything  to do  with Cameron's decision to  add this to the story?

Local Trouble

I think the only ulterior motive in sending a green lieutenant was so Burke would have more influence over the mission.

In hindsight, the Apone's squad got extremely unlucky when they found the one colonist who hadn't popped yet.  If that hadn't happened, they may have never awakened the aliens and could have conceivably withdrawn to the APC without firing a shot.

Satisfied that all of the colonists were dead, they may have pulled out entirely with Burke's specimens in tow (whether or not Ripley objected) and returned to Gateway.

The intention wasn't to suggest a conspiracy, just to show the marine's overt cockiness shortly before getting their asses handed to them.

There was no overall conspiracy that went past Burke.  The company knew about the Alien back when Ripley was at her inquest.  Burke was the only one of the suits that took a chance she might've been telling the truth.

He had enough sway, supposedly, to influence Gorman's involvement.

But most LTs are the privates of the officer corps.  With that rank he wouldn't be swimming in experience anyways.  That's why even though senior NCOs are outranked by an LT, those same NCOs help plan and guide and oversee the mission.

Burke was likely the only Company suit at the inquest.

Makes even more sense this way.

I imagine the unidentified ones probably represented various law enforcement and regulatory agencies.  It seems odd that Ripley didn't have her own lawyer present since Van Leuwen apparently had the authority to level criminal charges against her.

Corporal Hicks

As far as she's concerned, she's in the right. Perhaps she didn't feel the need. But given the Special Edition, maybe Burke was supposed to act in that capacity?

SM

It was a board of enquiry; not a trial.

Local Trouble

You don't necessarily have to be on trial in order to need legal counsel.

SM

Obviously she didn't.
