Still better than the pseudo super preds in predators  ;D

Never thought they were still "super" preds in the movie.  Wasn't that only in one of the earlier scripts?

There was Noland's comment about dogs and wolves. But i always thought he meant it that way :classic's are the wolves, the natural prototype and the black preds the dogs, improved and specialized through genetic tampering for special purposes.

I think it's intended to be the other way around in the movie.

Yes, you are propably right.

But if you think about it, i believe my version would makes more sense. With breeding you can make dogs superior to wolves in certain aspects. Make them smarter, bigger, bigger jaws, more stamia...for whatever purpose you can breed the fitting dog. It also maches with he rather specialised roles of the three super preds.

Except the movies clearly tries to show the 'Super' Predators are bigger, which is one of the points Nolan makes.

OG Pred

Dislike the whole DNA - Hybrid choice....  To me it undercuts and cheapens the whole Predator mythos. They're Predators they don't need to upgrade with any other DNA. Its simply a lazy way of having a reason for the whole "bigger is always better" over the top scenarios in most movies these days. I like a lot of the movie because its Predator, but that part bothers me so much.

I might have been able to except it a little more if say the earth scientist had somehow created that monstrosity. By possibly introducing foreign DNA into a Predator they found at crash. And the fugitive Predator arrived to try and destroy it as well as battle the humans.

We really need someone to bring back a good story line with some added mystery and unknown throughout the film.... and for gods sake let the main Predator live for once!

my two cents

First, welcome to the party!  :)

Second, if it helps, Shane Black did confirm in a tweet that it isn't all Predators that practice this. And, based on the script for "Predators", you can also include the Super Predators from "Predators" and the Upgrade Predator from "The Predator" as members of the same rogue clan who do not follow the old Yautja ways and honor system by hunting their own kind and using self genetic mutation practices.

Granted, it's been a few years since I replayed it through but wasn't that essentially the Big Bad from Concrete Jungle?

I wonder how well Upgrade would have gone over had his not been so tall. Perhaps just small adaptations like the armour but regularly sized.

You mean Stone Heart? Its never implied that the scientists did genetics mods on him or the other 2. Just that they were augmented with cybernetic parts that allowed them to be brainwashed/mind controlled, just like the human cyborgs. I think Stone Heart was already of that size before getting captured, he was the alpha leader of his little hunting party, implied to be older than the other shorter captured predators you find, which were reffered as unblooded/young bloods.

But Hunter Borgia definitely did genetic upgrades on himself.

I think it would have gone over much better. Even if they went just a foot or two taller, it would still achieve what Shane Black was trying to convey without hugging the borderline of absurdity.

I imagine that people would have complained about the Upgrade being too similar in stature to the Super Predators. Seems like a no-win situation. I don't think there could have been an easier way to portray the Upgrade without getting flack from some area of fandom  :-\ Despite that, I feel that keeping closer to the size of the originals would have been the better route to take.

I hated it personally. It ruins what made the Predator so great which was its simplicity. It's The Deadliest Game but with an alien instead of a human hunter and that basic idea is what makes the Predator such a great concept. Its an attempt to over complicate the character. Its not this hard to tell a new Predator story. The EU has been churing out GREAT Predator stories for years. Just take the Predator and drop it into a new and interesting environment. A Predator film set in feudal japan, The old west, etc.

Unless they just indicated in interviews, or through the narrative, that the Super & Upgrade were one in the same. If you do that AND include this a rogue faction of predators, and suddenly presto, no one has a problem!

Let's just be nice and next time try to add to this civil conversation instead. Cheers.

It is.  Classics are supposed to be domesticated and docile with a sense of honor and loyalty.  The "supers" are supposed to be wild and vicious , bigger and badder.

I always felt a better comparison would have been alligators and crocodiles.

I don't love it and find it convoluted.
