Google trends. Way of gauging ALIEN VS PREDATOR movie or franchise popularity.

With the recent box office failure of THE PREDATOR, a couple of posters pointed out maybe this is an esoteric franchise and Shane Black should've consulted market research first.

Now hold the Bill Hicks jokes, marketing is basically purely numbers. How many willing buyers do you have to come to your market? Or it's like a fisherman who goes to a lake, knowing in advance, there are no fish to be had- only to be told "you're not a good fisherman if you didn't catch anything".

A free programme by search engine google called "google trends" can show you whether the world is waiting for another ALIEN, PREDATOR or in my case ALIEN VS PREDATOR. The results for AVP between when google started in 2004-present day are depressing.

The peak of interest was August 2004 at 100% (AVP movie 2004)
December 2007 at 34% (AVP-R movie)
February 2010 at 33% (ALIENS VS PREDATOR- 2010 videogame)

Before tapering off at a mere 6% in September 2018.

So is it a case of an epic kick-ass movie would peak interest again or are studios just playing it safe that the above spikes in interest were just catching some dollar while experiencing the laws of diminishing returns?

Fox would've done market research before green lighting the movie - it's their job, not Black's.  Google trends would be a fairly terrible indicator for interest in a movie because, as SM said, it largely shows people reacting to news about new material.

Besides, doesn't that check what's being searched? I do; need the search to come here and also FB updates me quite well.

I'm starting to think it would've been more profitable to make AVP3 instead of The Predator. We're fresh off Covenant, and Predators wasn't too bad. Not to mention we've seen the predator making cameos in videogames lately. So both creatures were in recent entertainment.

If nothing else, it might've had a considerably smaller budget, and brought in a decent return.
