I lied, my body was not ready.

EDIT

Any advice for Games workshop paints for Aliens? I've got a starter kit from a Warhammer box I bought a while ago, and I can get some individuals. Want to get the Aliens done at least -- base coating in Chaos Black, then thinking blue/silver for the Infant Warriors and brown/bronze from the Stalkers.

Are you looking for a bronze like NECA's Scorpion alien or something like their brown warrior?

If you want silver aliens there is pretty good tutorial for GW paints midpage here and some less detailed one for brown stalkers:

http://www.agisn.de/html/avp.html

If you want different colors, you could just use them und substitute colors to taste.

Tons of advice actually. If you can find a few screencaps from games or movies closest to what you have in mind that'd be easiest, but either way we can develop a good scheme.

My preferred method for bronze/copper colours right now is to start with a bright silver, and give it washes of GW Fuegan Orange til it's sufficiently rich, then add black wash to bring it down a few notches. You can also do a drybrush of silver halfway through on detailed objects so it's a bit more defined. A good example is the pipes on my Marines - you can add more layers of orange or black wash to make it richer or darker:

This Alien was painted with just silver/orange wash, without the black stage. I think you'd definitely want to keep the black since this is intentionally cartoonishly bright to emulate the Alien Trilogy dog-strain palette, but it shows what you can do with one paint and one wash done in alternating layers a few times:

Also here's some of my first batch of Aliens, done in metallics. I went pretty fiddly with lots of layers but it would be easy to simplify the method a bit and add some blue in there.

The really important thing when painting Aliens is to have clear ideas of the differences between similar techniques, most importantly of all, the difference between an overbrush and a drybrush, and between a wash and a glaze.

Thanks guys!

That's great, especially the advice for the bronze. I'll find some reference photos, but I love how those black Aliens came out above. I've also seen some people get a transparent dome effect going that I'd love to try.

I've had a few goes at different translucent heads, here's a sample.

Boardgame Infants, using a combination of painted stripes and washes of thinned black:

Much more subtle under daylight, without the camera flash:

The Kenner Panther, which is more Fuegan Orange over a pale orange base/white undercoat:

And a one off Stalker using manual layering/blending techniques. Mostly various browns and brown/black washes:

Prior to the gloss finish:

That glossed domed Stalker is gorgeous. I actually saw someone on Facebook who'd managed to get it to look like the skull under the dome on their Infant Warriors, I'll try that (same technique, I'm guessing, just painted to look like there's light catching the brow highlights).

Do you have a gloss you recommend?

GW gloss looks great and goes on well in 1-2 coats, but i've had trouble with both dust and transport foam bonding into it in high temperatures. The Army Painter gloss is just as good but without any issues.

Also, which fb group did you see that on?

Oh, I've seen those before and totally forgot them. Joseph does some great stuff, I pinched (and darkened a bit) one of his colour schemes for my Evolved Warriors.

My take on a domeless open skull:

Thanks. I'm getting hyped to do the predators for the boardgame once my last order arrives. I might have to do an Elite or two to test my colours before the bulk arrive. Still have to find bases for the starter set guys and any non unicast conversions though...

I won't go into wargear details, but my boardgame preds are/will be:

Berserker clan:
- Elder Berserker
- Tracker x2
- Berserker x2
- Hellhound x3

Warrior clan:
- Warrior Elder
- Warrior x4
- Elite x1

Hunter clan:
- Hunter Elder
- Hunter x3
- Elite x2

Not techincally legal lists, but they're there for hyperspecialised missions, and provide a pool of 400pts give or take, for each type of Predator to select from for normal/mixed lists.

My boardgame Aliens (all finished except for the hq praetorian):

- queen
- praetorian
- evolved warrior (2)
- #6
- predalien (2)
- infant warriors (22)
- alien warriors (12)
- stalkers (12)
- spitters (5)
- facehuggers (10)
- royal guard (2)
- eggs (5)

The weird numbers are from painting a handful of extra infants, warriors, stalkers and an extra predalien, in case of spawning said models in a game where all the default numbers are still on the table. An unlikely occurance but it feels good to have the spares just in case.

I ended up caving and got a final order (I REALLY should have waited and done all three batches together, cos I ended up spending f**king 45 pound on shipping alone) with:

Unicast Praetorian
Powerloader
Evolved Warriors
Elite Predators (which I apparently drunkenly ordered in the German edition, so I'll need to print the right cards :D)
