I'm using Alien Resurrection as reference to show the different styles of direction when it comes to the actors. Jeunet used a lot drastic angles and close-ups, and obviously doesn't mind over the top characters, because the overall character performance just doesn't vibe well with the previous Alien movies. I know what the Strauses mean by taking a back to basics approach, whether or not they executed it properly. I found their approach more acceptable than those in the past... but that's my opinion.
Back on topic:
Another thing that I enjoyed was that we actually followed the Predator the way we would a main character, which I think was necessary since the setting had to be on Earth once again. It gave the movie a unique feel that I really enjoyed. Don't get me wrong, I am an Alien fan first and foremost, although I personally
do not think that the Aliens got the shaft in this movie. I have never thought of the Aliens as having any kind of extreme resilience, I never have, even in the old movies. If Parker had a shotgun when Lambert was attacked, the Alien would have been toast. If the Colonial Marines didn't have to ditch their pulse rifles, they may have stood a
better chance in the hive. And the Predators have the tools and the talent...
There's my rant for the day. Sorry.
