I've seen many claim that it stands for "Life Viable" but it seems like this is largely fan theory. Has it been confirmed by anything official?
It could be the Roman numeral 55 denoting the sector of space with 426 denoting the surveyed astronomical body itself.
Or it could be the initials of a scientist. Kinda like how the Andromeda galaxy is also known as M31, with M standing for Messier.

Truth, justice and the American way.
"Life Viable" makes sense.
It wasn't life viable, though.
I like the initials idea.
Location Vector was the first one I heard, but never been able to verify if it was legit.
First one I heard but it never made much sense.
You know, I always thought it was meant to be level. I don't know why I thought it was fitting

I never took it to mean that the planet was already habitable, just that it was close enough to be a candidate for a "shake 'n bake colony."
I have no clue but in the EU, every planet seems to be an LV.

Yeah not with only three numbers.
Quote from: 426Buddy on Apr 30, 2024, 02:59:56 AMI have no clue but in the EU, every planet seems to be an LV.
Certainly the current EU. Which seems a little silly. Older stuff used similar formatting but with other letters.
Might be landing viable, the computer analysing whether the planetoid has a strong or weak ionosphere.
Funnily enough, I was just yesterday thinking about how in Alien universe planets have codenames, not names, which adds to the more its more realistic nature in comparision to other sci-fi franchises: greedy megacorporations don't call a planet "Tatooine" or "Krypton"
They call them Fiorina though.
Or Acheron.

Still seems like code names come first, and noteworthy planets get actual names later.
Lovely Vibes.

Acheron is a nickname we don't hear in the movies. Its only name in the films is LV-426
Can only guess it was to avoid confusion by giving it two names. The script had a line from Van Leuwen telling Ripley "They call it Acheron now". And I think the sign was also supposed to have 'Acheron' too.
It means Las Vegas

Peter Briggs pointed out on Twitter that the name Acheron is actually visible in the deleted colony scene when Simpson and Lydecker leave Operations.
LV would be a star catalogue, much like nasa uses. Only Cameron would know what it means, if anything. Someone shoot him an email to find out!
There was also "KG348" used in Isolation. Don't know what that means either.
And BG386 used in AVP 2010.

Ooh! Have to go hunt for that.

It's on the glass behind them right as they walk out.

You lot are no fun.
Since you know where it is you can now go spelunking to see if it's visible later in the movie.

Hicks runs past it to seal that door before the Aliens get into Operations but it's unreadable :'(

Will it be enshrined in the book of canon?

That dude is f**king tracing.
Old mate Sal would be proud.
There's a question: is Sal generated art appreciably more ethical than AI generated art?

Additionally, AI is unable to understand theft is unethical.
