Forbidden Zone? Neat. I should revisit the recent three movies soon, before Kingdom is out for sure, since I've only seen them once each I think. I revisited the original five films a year or so ago.
I hope that code name means we're getting nuclear war in this.

Depending on how far in the future this is set, we could even be well in the aftermath of the war. If the apes have a "Kingdom" and a Forbidden Zone is already established....

This looks great. Transplanting so much of the iconography of the original films into the current ongoing
Apes continuity, and to seemingly great effect. Hyped for the Forbidden Zone, hyped for the Immortan Joe ape big bad.
Would love for this to get as weird as some of the original movie's followups do.
Loved seeing that orangutan wearing the clothing style from the original series.
Getting close to the 1968 movie, nice.
Wes Ball...
Quote from: BlueMarsalis79 on Nov 02, 2023, 09:58:34 PMWes Ball ]:
Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are writing it, so they might offset Ball directing.
Edit: Oh and Prey's Patrick Aison had a hand in the script as well.
I can't speak to anything else Ball has made, haven't seen any of it, but I'm honestly quite liking what I'm seeing here.
I know this isn't actually the same timeline/continuity as the original film, but I do wonder how close to that timeframe we are here. There's definitely a pretty significant time jump since Reeves' films, the Forbidden Zone seems to either be established or in the process of being established, etc. Not to mention some pretty direct iconography from the original being lifted, with a literal recreation of the beach shot.

Ape culture has definitely evolved since War, for sure.
I need to revisit the recent trilogy. I think I saw Rise twice, and the Reeves ones once each. I know I really dug them, but my memory of the specifcis of how they play out is a bit hazy.
I grew up watching the original five movies over and over, and revisited them a bit over a year ago, so they're embedded much more in my brain than the recent ones, and so far Kingdom seems to be really stringing together what I know from the originals and what I remember from the new trilogy in a cool way.
They really need to get a better writer for these. I was disappointed not only in their ability to take over a franchise forcibly but their ability to deconstruct it to the point where its just another low brow thriller of monkeys throwing bananas at people and the people have guns. then it inverses itself. Like it probably took 10 years for Planet of the Apes originally to be conceived. These only take two week writers workshop to write out in full (insert zombie apocalypse, romantic interest with human characters and then you're done). Movie deal signed.
Wasn't it written by a guy named Pierre Boulle? Nobody remembers that name anymore.

Apocalypto with Apes? Sooooold!
Yep sold, now they have my attention. I also desperately need to see the first trilogy again.
It's such a terrible title.
A kingdom is the domain of a king. A planet is a planet. Kingdom of the planet makes no sense.
Welcome to PotA titles.

Yeah this looks sick. I'm all in.
This looks incredible.
This movie, alongisde Alien and Dune Part 2 is my most anticipated of the year.
Apes need no king.
Human lead looks to be an astronaut, based on what she's wearing when Noa is pulling her out of the water.
Is this series meant to be a reboot? I always got the impression it was prequel to the original film.
Quote from: SM on Feb 12, 2024, 02:01:04 AMIs this series meant to be a reboot? I always got the impression it was prequel to the original film.
I think at the time
Rise was made, it was done in a way that it could be a prequel to the original if it wasn't a success, or it could grow into a franchise of its own if it was a hit. It took the latter path and seems to totally be its own thing separate from the originals at this stage.
It would be kind of hard for these to be prequels, since we're clearly shown in the original that Taylor and his crew left Earth in the 70s.

Who knows, maybe "Taylor" might be Mae's last name in this new movie.
I remember some background detail in the first flick about a space mission being launched or lost which was to imply Chuck Heston was on board?
They mention a space mission but it can't really be the one from the original.
Oh I stand corrected on the human character's name – turns out the old report saying Mae was wrong. It's actually Nova, which is a fun inversion from the original film.
Odd, considering there was a Nova in War.
As mankind gets dumber the pool of baby names they can remember decreases.

Your brain keeps looping back around, just like the original movies. ;)

Watched it once as a kid, right around the time it came out, which was just after I got into the original series. Didn't like it, never saw it again.
I'll give it a revisit when I watch all of the other movies before
Kingdom, even though I probably shouldn't haha.
I also saw the Burton movie in my late teens, I remember it being fun with a nonsensical ending.
Outside of the makeup effects, there really isn't much there.

Really, really liked this. Inexplicable how consistently good (and relevant) this franchise continues to be, nearly sixty years out from its original release.
I think Dawn is one of the best big budget mainstream movies ever made, how does it compare to that?
Quote from: T Dog on May 10, 2024, 11:40:29 AMI think Dawn is one of the best big budget mainstream movies ever made, how does it compare to that?
(Note: I say this from the POV of being a person that likes
War a bit more than
Dawn, I think. But
Dawn rocks!)
I guess if I were to rank the new series, I'd say this is probably a bit above
Rise, a bit below the Reeves ones. But that's all pretty malleable/subject to change, and what I really love here the way
Kingdom marries the sensibilities of the recent trilogy with the more expanded post-human world of the original movies (I've always adored the original five film run), and charts a pretty clear path from one body of films to the other in terms of the Apes' societies (emphasis on the plural form of the word there) and their relationship with what humans used to be which we know, eventually, will evolve into them forgetting what humans ever were (yes, I know the original films and the current ones are not in the same continuity, but it still feels like these movies are building towards roughly that same endgame result that was the Ape culture in the 1968 film). And on the topic of varying degrees of remembering and forgetting what once was, I really like the way that Caesar's legacy runs through this outing as a series of competing myths about who he was, what lessons he imparted, and what his actions ~300 years ago mean for Apes (and humans) at large now, so far removed from direct, in-the-moment impact his actions. His presence looms pretty heavily here, though the new characters are all pretty standout as well, some totally outside of Caesar's shadow, and others very directly taking cover within it.

If they manage to keep the quality up, I can see this playing very well. The Caesar trilogy is more or less a loose remake of the latter movies from the original series, Kingdom opens the door for a very interesting bridge story a few hundred years later in which the shadow of the old world, humanity and their abandoned, grown over cities, and Caesar's legacy still looms large, and a third trilogy would be, I guess, more or less a riff on the era of the first two movies in the original series, set a couple thousand years in the future with no trace of sentient human history existing except within the Forbidden Zone, until some visitors from space come crashing down...
Very much enjoyed this. It's not quite as good as Dawn and War, but above Rise for me. And I'm very curious as to where this will go.
